Finance Specialist for Wild Child Freeschool (

Wild Child Freeschool is seeking an experienced Finance Specialist for its outdoor homeschool and camp programs in Silicon Valley, South Bay and Santa Cruz. Wild Child seeks to empower children to recognize and pursue their individual passions in a supportive community. With an emphasis on kid-directed learning through nature connection, each of our seven weekly programs serves mixed-age groups and strives to remain inclusive of different learning styles during 6 hour outdoor days. We are committed to providing powerful life lessons in social, emotional, and educational growth for every child, as well as a supportive work environment for our contracted workers.

The Finance Specialist writes, monitors, and manages the annual budget and is responsible for all aspects of bookkeeping. The Finance Specialist regularly updates and advises the Wild Child team on the financial position of the organization, in order to inform operational decisions and to maintain the organization’s financial stability at all times. The Finance Specialist is the financial gatekeeper for the organization and keeps a constant pulse on financial health, with the goal of long term financial health and responding to the organization’s changing needs.

The Finance Specialist works under the supervision of the Fiscal Sponsor, with the expectation that they maintain a high-level of integrity and autonomy in completing their tasks. The Finance Specialist will also work closely with the Program Director, Program Coordinator, and Fiscal Sponsor in their respective arenas and on occasion with the guides to maintain and uphold the organization’s mission statement.

Finance Specialist Deliverables:

  • Write Annual Budget of $200,000+ with a goal of 2-4% Net Income as a reserve to help with sustainability.
  • Monitor Finances on a Monthly and Quarterly basis using Financial Reports.
  • Lead Quarterly Finance Review meetings and provide Budget vs. Actuals reports and upcoming Income and Expense projections.
  • Complete annual Finance Timeline.
  • Manage all bookkeeping including Quickbooks Online Database, Accounts Receivable, and Accounts Payable.
  • Manage Cash Flow.
  • Attend Operations meetings.
  • Create Program Level Budgets. 
  • Answer customer, employee, and contractor question related to Billing/Invoicing.
  • Upkeep and manage Cancellation Policy and refunds.
  • Prepare 990, 1099, and W2 Tax Information for Fiscal Sponsor.
  • Support Program Director in Annual Fundraising Campaign.

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 2 consecutive years writing, monitoring, and managing an annual budget of $100,000 - $300,000. Successfully meeting Net Income goals.
  • Experienced in creating, interpreting, and explaining Financial Reports.
  • Minimum 2 Years in Full Charge Bookkeeping role: Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, and managing Cash Flow.
  • Minimum 2 years experience in Quickbooks Online managing database.

  • Experienced in working or volunteering for nonprofit organizations.
  • Experienced in grant writing and fundraising.
  • Experienced in a organization with tuition based income as the primary income source.
  • Leaderships skills and interest in developing professionally.
  • Experienced in providing reports and leading finance review meetings for multiple levels of the organization: executive and program level. Strong ability to explain finances to multiple levels of the organization.
  • Experienced working in an organization that works with children and the outdoors.
  • Experienced in marketing.
  • Strong project management skills for complex, multifaceted projects resulting in measurable successes and program/financial stability.
  • Experienced with Google Drive.
  • Knowledgeable about working with children of varying ages and abilities, including twice exceptional (2E) children, particularly in homeschooling, unschooling, or alternative education settings.
  • Interested in outdoor skills, environmental activism, and community organizing.
  • Experienced with group meetings using consensus based decision making.


Compensation Information:

Contracted 1099 position

$25-$27/hour depending on experience

20 hours a week


This contract position is mostly remote, with 1-2 in person meetings a month in the Santa Cruz, Silicon Valley, and/or East Bay areas.
