POSITION DESCRIPTION

 The Director of Foundation and Government Relations will lead FONA’s foundation/government fundraising strategies and efforts, and will design, articulate, manage, and execute a comprehensive development plan that meets annual and long-term fundraising goals.

FONA currently has a strong pipeline of foundations, mainly for the education programs like Washington Youth Garden, but there is room for growth. Your work will focus on maintaining and growing current funding relationships through conducting research and prospecting for new support; writing compelling and concise proposals and reports; and refining/managing FONA’s grant tracking systems. 

You will be a key member of our growing Development team, reporting to the Executive Director and supervising contracted grant writer resources. You will also work very closely with the Director of Programs and the Director of Development and Communications. Besides managing grants from proposal to close out, you will play a key role in external relationships - stewarding funders through phone calls, meetings, and site visits to the Arboretum to keep current and new funders engaged and aware of FONA programs.

RESPONSIBILITIES

65% Grant and Contract Management

Foundation Grant Management 

  • Lead the application process from reviewing and summarizing RFPs, meeting with stakeholders to discuss direction for proposals, writing letters of inquiry/grant proposals, and preparing submissions. 
  • Develop grant budgets and budget narratives, and organize/update grant attachments as needed.
  • Create narrative and financial reports for a current portfolio of 25 foundation and government entities.
  • Refine/Manage grant tracking systems and grant folders in Google Drive, and keep donor profiles up to date on DonorPerfect.

Government Grant & Contract Management 

  • Manage current portfolio of 5 government grant programs - some multi-year
  • Develop procedures for the timely reimbursement of government committed funds.
  • Submit all reimbursement requests and withdrawals from government entities along with required documentation (timesheets, invoices, receipts, etc.)
  • Submit grant budget amendments and revisions to project plan and timeline as needed.
  • Communicate regularly with government grant program officers.

25% Institutional Funder Identification, Qualification, Cultivation, Solicitation, and Stewardship 

  • Perform research on prospective funders to determine potential program alignment with institutional funding priorities.
  • Communicate with current and prospective funders by sharing EOY reports and providing tailored summaries to keep them informed of FONA’s progress towards their specific funding interests.
  • Steward relationships with funders through phone/video calls or in-person meetings to share progress and/or programming changes.
  • Schedule and lead site visits to the Arboretum and the Washington Youth Garden 
  • Work with FONA Board of Directors to identify additional potential funding opportunities.
  • Manage prospect pipeline to seek new funding opportunities 

10% Other Organizational Support: Planning, Evaluation, & Individual Fundraising

  • Work closely with the Director of Programs to develop useful tools for project management and output and outcome tracking, such as: work plans and timelines for programs, logic models, and evaluation tools/outcome measurements (pre- and post-surveys, eval rubrics, etc.)
  • Create annual Institutional Relations budget and support subprogram budgets
  • Support the annual report for the organization
  • Support donor cultivation events
  • Weekly development and communication meetings

REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field
  • Five years experience in non-profit philanthropy, grant focus
  • Project management and budget development experience
  • Experience working with both foundational and federal/local government funders
  • Experience working with grant management systems
  • Understanding of Negotiated Indirect Cost Rate Agreements a plus
  • Horticultural, educational or environmental knowledge a plus

Salary

At least USD 70,000Salary is negotiable depending on experience
