Background: The Institute of Current World Affairs (ICWA), one of the country’s oldest global fellowship programs, is looking for a program officer to join a well-established and active nonprofit that supports two-year, culturally immersive fellowships in different countries and regions.

Job description: The program officer will be an integral part of a small team helping ICWA manage its fellows, oversee communications, support fundraising efforts, organize events and carry out various administrative duties. This position is responsible for maintaining the organizational website, generating social media posts, managing databases, and providing day-to-day administrative tasks and general team support. Ideal candidates will enjoy having a diverse range of responsibilities, take initiative in helping build our outreach and have strong writing and copyediting skills. This position is ideal for someone starting out in his or her career, with an interest toward foreign affairs or current world events. Because of ICWA’s small office structure, some flexibility of schedule may be permitted for those pursuing graduate degrees while employed.

Responsibilities will include:

• Website management and posting, including writing and copyediting

• Drafting and copyediting of news releases, newsletters, development and other communication materials

• Tweeting, blogging and other social media activity

• Assist with development planning and coordination

• Undertake research assignments as necessary

• Coordinate with IT and bookkeeping

• Assist in the planning and staffing of ICWA events

• Assure on-time payment of bills and invoices

• Coordinate with building management

• Procure office supplies

• Other duties as assigned


• 2-4 years of relevant experience

• Knowledge of basic office and database functions/programs

• Knowledge of Wordpress

• Basic knowledge of HTML and CSS

• Excellent verbal, research and communications skills, and attention to detail

• Proficiency in Microsoft Office suites

• Demonstrated writing and proofreading skills, including an excellent understanding of grammar and syntax, to write clear and concise correspondence

• Ability to work independently and proactively by suggesting new projects and tasks to advance ICWA's mission
