NJDC is hiring a Deputy Director!

We’re looking for someone who is fiercely committed to juvenile defense and advancing racial justice, who can mentor legal staff and manage multiple projects, and who has excellent legal research, analytical, and writing skills. We need someone who can enhance the already-amazing work our small team does, who is dedicated to serving our nationwide community of juvenile defenders and advocates, and who has vision to help lead NJDC and our community forward.

Summary

An expert in juvenile defense; must be able to monitor important trends in the juvenile legal system and identify, analyze, research, and write about policies that impact the defense of children; must be able to think creatively, identify policy trends, and implement new projects and ideas while managing, coaching, and leading a team of talented legal staff.

Location: Washington, DC preferred; consideration will be given to outstanding candidates who would work remotely and travel to DC regularly

Key Responsibilities

As a member of the leadership team, the deputy director will:

·      Partner with the Executive Director in essential internal leadership activities and organizational planning.

·      Supervise, mentor, and coach legal staff, consultants, law clerks, and interns.

·      Initiate, supervise, and lead programmatic activities to promote better representation practices in juvenile court through organizing and planning training and technical assistance activities, legal and institutional research, and new project development.

·      Devise advocacy strategies to promote juvenile defense and juvenile court reform.

·      Respond to requests for information from members of the legal field, media, and other juvenile justice and related organizations.

·      Act as liaison between the organization and other national juvenile justice programs; represent the organization at meetings, conferences, and events.

·      Participate in and review the management of the organization’s website, listservs, and other outreach.

·      Identify best practices and improve internal systems with an eye toward future organizational needs.

·      Participate in developing and implementing annual and long-term fundraising strategies.

Qualifications

·      Law degree and comprehensive understanding of the juvenile legal system, current issues, and policies

·      3+ years in a management position in a defender office, nonprofit organization, foundation, or government agency

·      Track record delivering superior results, commanding respect, and assuming leadership roles

·      Demonstrated excellence in written communication

·      Success in roles requiring execution of multiple tasks while responding to multiple priorities

·      Proven ability to work with efficiency, flexibility, and good attitude

·      Ability to remain focused in the face of pressure, deliver against timelines, and not be intimidated by tasks or time limitations

·      Demonstrated ability to build and maintain relationships with a wide array of people—junior and senior legal staff, foundation and non-profit organizations, and from diverse backgrounds and cultures

·      Record of operating with excellence in all matters

·      Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills

·      Passion for juvenile defense issues

·      Ability to exercise tact and diplomacy in organizational settings

·      Ability to be transparent, direct, substantive, and defend/debate ideas without ego

·      Self-starter, self-disciplined with spark, imagination, and creativity

·      Interest in growing development and fundraising skills
