Campaigner

The Center for International Environmental Law (CIEL) is hiring a Campaigner in its People, Land & Resources program. Post-pandemic safety restrictions, this position will (ideally) be based in Washington, DC and join a dynamic team of lawyers and advocates working to change the system to better protect people and the planet. We’re looking for someone who is energized by power mapping, passionate about developing campaign strategies, experienced in building diverse coalitions, and excited to use creative approaches to decolonize law and finance.

This position is ideal for an early to mid-career professional who cares deeply about democratizing decision-making to ensure that frontline communities, directly impacted groups, and Indigenous Peoples have access to information about, and the ability to meaningfully participate in, decisions that affect their lives, livelihoods, and rights. In the wake of the pandemic, many financial institutions and governments are expediting permitting and funding for large-scale development projects, including fossil fuel infrastructure and other “energy access” investments. The Campaigner will be working to ensure these institutions expand (rather than contract) access to information, participation, and justice while recognizing how COVID has further jeopardized communities and their access to these spaces.

Whether you care about indigenous sovereignty, human rights, climate justice, self-determination, biodiversity, or social justice (or hopefully, all of the above!), this work touches them all. The position will be working to counter balance corporate power, build the capacity of local communities and civil society to participate in environmental decisions, expand protections for environmental defenders, and protect our right to a healthy planet.

If this sounds like exciting work for you, apply to join our team!
