Background: 

Based in East Harlem, two long-standing and well-regarded harm reduction organizations in New York City are seeking a Drop In Center Manager. The non-profits, the process of completing a merger, are innovative organizations serving low-income people who use drugs and other marginalized individuals. The wide range of mobile and center-based services are delivered by upwards of 80 staff and peer workers, and include syringe access, overdose prevention, public health, care coordination, medical care, holistic, peer education, and advocacy services. The organizations have a combined $7 million budget made up of mainly government grants. 

Position Summary: 

The Drop In Center Manager (DICM) is a detail oriented and compassionate individual who cares about the wellbeing of every participant coming through NYHRE’s doors. The DICM demonstrates exceptional skills in working with marginalized population and shows reliable creativity and skills in de-escalation, management of people, and systems. The DICM works supervises the DIC team and works with the Clinic / HUB team to ensure that there is a calm flow of participants in the DIC and that every participant receives the services that they need in a timely fashion. Those services include harm reduction supplies (syringes, smoking kits, safer sex kits, narcan kits, etc), medical services, coffee, tea, food, bathroom, shower, laundry, and respite. 

Hours: Full-time, M-F 12:30pm-8:30pm 

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Lead team of 10+ staff 
  • Supervise DIC staff’s work; provide regular supportive and concrete feedback to improve service provision 
  • Make sure that all the equipment and utilities in the DIC are correctly functioning at all time 
  • Ensure safety for participants and staff in the DIC 
  • Deescalate conflicts that occur in the DIC 
  • Continuously update the policies and procedures for the DIC as necessary 
  • Lead morning DIC meetings with DIC and Clinic/HUB staff 
  • Ensure participants flow through the space efficiently and create systems to improve service delivery and participant care 
  • Determine when and for how long participants are suspended from accessing DIC services after critical incidents 
  • Build DIC staffs’ skills in conflict de-escalation 
  • Assist DIC staff in intervening in overdoses and monitoring participants after an overdose takes place 
  • Create system for participant flow throughout the first floor and to services on the second floor 
  • Ensure DIC is kept clean and organized 
  • Work with second floor staff to create communication system to ensure participants receive services in a timely manner 
  • Work with Distribution Manager to ensure the DIC is stocked with all supplies necessary for services 
  • Work with the Operations Manager to ensure maintenance and repairs in the DIC are completed in a timely manner 
  • Other tasks as necessary and identified by supervisor 

 

Requirements and Experience: 

  • The DICM is someone with an active interest in harm reduction, syringe exchange, and/ or social justice as it pertains to individuals who use drugs or who engage in sex work. 
  • Lived experience in the areas of substance use, sex work, HIV and HCV prevention preferred.  
  • Extensive knowledge and experience in the areas of safer injection techniques and overdose prevention, HCV prevention and treatment a must. Knowledge of the Bronx and East Harlem IDU/ substance use communities preferred.   
  • Must be dedicated to advancing an agenda of equal rights and social justice for low-income people who use drugs, especially women of color through activism and political participation. 
  • Must be committed to advancing an anti-racist, anti-sexist, anti-homophobic agenda. 
  • Must be an organized, self-motivated team-player, with strong interpersonal and communication skills, basic computer skills, and the ability and willingness to be hands-on and solve problems as they arise. 
  • Must be committed to the principles of Harm Reduction and to working with low-income people who use drugs and who are sex workers. 
  • Bilingual (Spanish) highly preferred.
