Make the Road New York (MRNY) seeks a full-time, bilingual (Spanish & English) paralegal to support our Immigration Team in Staten Island and Brooklyn

MRNY is a 23,000 member-strong membership organization, which catalyzes broad city, state and national public policy reform from the ground up. Through organizing, high-quality service provision and advocacy, MRNY works to promote equity and opportunity for working class New Yorkers.

 

 LEGAL AND SUPPORT SERVICES AT MAKE THE ROAD NEW YORK

The Department of Legal and Support Services at MRNY works to strengthen MRNY’s organizing work by (1) helping to envision and implement leverage strategies (including strategic litigation) that help win our organizing campaigns; (2) providing technical legal support for policy work; and (3) providing legal and support services to low-income immigrants. The Department currently employs approximately 45 attorneys, advocates and case managers. Our legal team is integrated into all aspects of the organization’s work. 

 

 CURRENT OPENING

We are hiring a paralegal to work with our Immigration Team to support the attorneys in providing immigration legal services to primarily Spanish-speaking clients. This position will require regular work in both Bushwick, Brooklyn and Port Richmond, Staten Island. This is an ideal position for an individual with immigration law experience who is interested in working at a fast-paced, community-oriented organization under the supervision of an attorney.

 

Job responsibilities will include:

  • Conducting intakes;
  • Preparing immigration applications, affidavits, and other supporting documents under attorney supervision;
  • Managing client and agency correspondence;
  • Making appropriate referrals;
  • Organizing and maintaining physical and electronic case files (data management in Salesforce);
  • Conducting Know Your Rights workshops internally with MRNY members and externally at partner organizations and community events;
  • Filing documents in immigration and family court;
  • Participating in MRNY staff meetings; and
  • Providing additional support as needed.

 

The ideal candidate will demonstrate a commitment to social justice, and in particular, a commitment to assisting low-income immigrants navigate the complex immigration system. Additionally, the ideal candidate will have impeccable attention to detail, excellent writing skills, thrive on working in a fast-paced, dynamic work environment, and have a sense of humor. Inter-borough travel is a must and flexibility with regard to weekend work is appreciated.

 

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree;
  • Spanish language fluency;
  • Experience working in immigration legal services and BIA (now DOJ) accreditation is strongly preferred;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills;
  • Interpersonal and organizational skills of the highest caliber;
  • Experience working with MRNY’s membership and client base–immigrants, survivors of domestic violence, LGBTQ identifying individuals, and youth.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, high intensity environment;
  • Willingness to travel between borough offices; and
  • Availability for occasional weekend work.
