 Opportunity: Community Artist in Residence

Feb 2021-June 2021; renewable July 2021-June 2022

Barrett Art Center seeks a dynamic and collaborative leader and educator to join its professional staff and serve as the Community Artist in Residence (CAiR). The CAiR leads Barrett Kids Art After School, one of Barrett Art Center’s flagship programs. This program provides a safe creative space for children from BAC’s Noxon Street neighborhood, ages 7-10 years old, to engage in the arts and connect with the community.

Position: Reporting to the Executive Director, Community Artist in Residence will:

●      Lead Barrett Kids After School Art & Homework Club. The CAiR’s role and responsibilities for Barrett Kids will evolve over their tenure

●      February – June 2021: CAiR administers and coordinates the Barrett Kids “Adopt an Artist” virtual mentoring program which pairs one student with their “Adopted Artist”  

●      July 2021 – June 2022: CAiR leads after-school art program 2-days/week; works with the assistance of college interns to provides academic support; and collaborates with guest teaching artists and partner organizations

●      Engage Barrett Kids with exhibition artwork as inspiration for art projects

●      Perform administrative program tasks, including evaluation and input on grant reporting and applications (in collaboration with the Executive Director) 

●      Coordinate a Barrett Kids Pop-Up Exhibition at the close of each semester and a Fall Open House event, as well as guest artist workshops throughout the program period.

●      Develop relationships with students’ caregivers 

●      Serve as a role model and collaborator to cultivate and support the role of Barrett’s Youth Ambassador

●      Maintain and strengthen relationships with partner organizations: Clinton Elementary School and Poughkeepsie Public Library, and others.

●      Share their own practice with the community through monthly open studio hours

Social practice artists who share the goal of impacting people, especially youth, through the transformative power of art are strongly encouraged to apply. 

Time Commitment and Compensation: 8 hours per week, $20/hr. CAiR receives bi-weekly compensation and pays a discounted studio rental fee ($600/mo., utilities included). This includes 24/7 access to Barrett House and kitchen, ample storage, and 2nd floor veranda porch. Studio access to move in own equipment and supplies Jan 29-31.

 The successful Community Artist in Residence will possess: 

●      Min. 4-year post-secondary degree in relevant field of study and/or 4 years relevant job experience; 

●      Experience in and a passion for leading creative arts programs, especially with children of diverse populations; (how about Experience in and a passion for…)

●      Excellent leadership, planning, and organizational skills, including the ability to manage multiple responsibilities simultaneously; 

●      Excellent verbal and written communication skills with an ability to engage and connect multiple program stakeholders through consistent outreach and follow up;

●      Spanish language skills are a BIG plus! 

The primary objectives of the Barrett Kids program are to:

●      Spark children's curiosity and provide opportunities to envision a future career in the arts through interactions with professional guest artists and arts organizations.

●      Develop students' critical thinking skills through engagement with art exhibitions at Barrett Art Center

●      Establish a lasting worldview grounded in arts and culture among young people who are demographically underrepresented in arts participation and arts leadership positions.
