POSITION OVERVIEW

Color Of Change PAC helps people respond effectively to injustice in the world by ensuring that Black issues are addressed by candidates looking to win with our community’s votes. As a national, Black Super PAC we push candidates to create a more human and less hostile world for Black people, and all people by going on the record about the policies they’ll support if elected and showcasing our volunteer capacity to boost or cripple their political aspirations.

In 2016 we launched an offline digital engagement program that attracted thousands of volunteers and had multiple entry points of engagement.  Over the last four years, the program has grown tremendously.  Creating a first-class experience for our members is central to our organizing strategy. We’ve learned the secret to generating voter turnout is to create an environment of Black joy – an experience with Black people at its center that treats each member as a leader, a strategist, and a vital part of the community.

Black people want to share meaningful experiences with other Black people, especially in the current political climate. We’re creating the volunteer experience to harness this untapped energy and respond to the challenges we face.  As a people, we are uniquely designed to innovate and collaborate.  We’ve lived through challenges and celebrated triumphs.  Our program is an iterative experience shaped by our values and collective brilliance. In the face of coronavirus and increased voter suppression tactics, we’ll engage 80,000 members of Color Of Change to participate in at least one voter contact action between now and November.

As the Director of Member Programming, you will be an important leader in the mobilization of Black member leaders in key geographies.  You will manage a team that creates a curriculum for our comprehensive field program that identifies, recruits, and develops Color Of Change PAC members across the country to win using digital technology, engagement organizing principles, and authentic Black joy experiences. You’ll work closely with the  National Field Director and the Senior Engagement Manager in a cross-departmental structure.  Your primary role will be to manage a team of curriculum leaders and event managers to build capacity for the field team.  Your role is critical to the success of the program and will report to the Sr. Deputy Political Director.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Director of Member Programming will be responsible for coaching a team comprised of curriculum specialists and event coordinators to create, test, and tweak a comprehensive voter contact training curriculum that supports our staff and members. The curriculum will be rooted in the principles of engagement organizing and invite Color Of Change PAC members into the matrix of engagement.  This person will be responsible for creating learning modules that communicate Color Of Change’s program directives and ensuring that each region clearly integrates the curriculum into their regional campaign plans.  The person who takes on this role will have a knack for creating strong systems, reinforcing the training curriculum through strategic questioning for coaching purposes, coordinating special events, and monitoring progress to goals.  This person will be comfortable learning a combination of web-based tools and creating various modules to determine what provides the best member experience and enables the larger field team to meet daily, weekly and monthly goals from now to December 2020.  (S)he will use discretion and independent judgment, as well as Color Of Change directives to iterate on a model program that leverages Color Of Change resources. The Director of Member Programming will bear primary responsibility for coaching field staff to hit goals to mobilize member leaders.  This person will also work with the Data Team, Digital Team, and Political Team to identify areas of opportunity for growth and development. S(he) will report to the Deputy Sr. Political Director.

QUALIFICATIONS

In addition to experience organizing in an electoral or accountability field campaign focused on volunteer-voter contact or a comparable online-offline advocacy program, we’ve identified necessary skills in three areas of responsibility -- roughly grouped into Organizing, Strategic Design and Project Management & Teamwork -- that would be necessary to succeed as a Director Of Member Programming.

Organizing

  • No matter how big the campaigns you’ve participated in, you see yourself first and foremost as an organizer who is comfortable using discretion and independent judgment.
  • You believe in people power, and if we can organize enough people behind a tested strategy we can go up against big-money interests and win.
  • You understand that the gold standard of any field program is a quality conversation between a volunteer and a voter.
  • You know that big organizing projects require attention to details, logistics, and simple math.
  • You appreciate numerical goals and understanding the metrics that are required to win on a daily, weekly, monthly, and quarterly basis.
  • You are highly flexible and willing to iterate even if it means constantly revising your plans in response to real-world developments.
  •  Flexibility, independent judgment, and discretion are your middle name.
  • You can publicly represent Color Of Change PAC in a professional and engaging manner with staff, volunteers, partners, and funders.
  • You are willing to follow Color Of Change PAC directives and be independent all at the same time.

Strategic Design

  • No matter what the project is, you always approach it backwards -- starting with the end goal in mind.
  • You define success with a clear target and sensory guidelines - what it looks like, what it sounds like, what it feels like, what it smells like, and what it tastes like.
  • You carefully choose metrics and create reporting systems that guide you and allows data to flow easily and quickly at all levels.
  • You identify strategic benchmarks to chunk the work into clearly defined peaks and valleys.
  • When getting a program off the ground you lighten your workload by making good structures great, then triaging the ones that need more support.
  • You embrace structures and procedures, but remember to breathe through ambiguity.

Project Management & Teamwork

  • You can manage volunteers and projects, and build relationships with movement partners.
  • You can work well independently and use your discretion for decision making at the same time as being a part of a team that includes a combination of folks leading data, digital communications, and volunteer engagement.
  • You’re able to nail this to work in an environment where much of the team is not co-located with you.
  • You can propose a program strategy for your assigned region but at the end of the day, you must take direction from leadership, align and go out and execute.
  • You’re willing to lead by example and engage in the work in a hands-on manner -- through participating in voter contact yourself to coaching other staff and volunteers.
  • You’re able to uphold the Color Of ChangePAC brand by demonstrating our values not just when you are on the job but in all your interactions both in person and on social media.
