Zone 126’s (is a sponsored project of the Fund for the City of NY, Inc.) mission is to ensure every child currently living in public housing has the education and skills needed to graduate from high school prepared for college or the workforce and enter the 21st century equipped with the tools needed to thrive.

Who is Zone 126?

Zone 126’s is as a community-based organization focused on Western Queens and is at the forefront of a collaborative strategy that supports youth attending local under-resourced schools to ensure that they have the skills and resources needed to succeed in life.

Where is Zone 126 located?

Each of the zip codes that are included in the Zone are anchored by a NYCHA (New York City Housing Authority) housing development (11101-Queensbridge Houses, 11102-Astoria Houses, and 11106-Ravenswood Houses). A 2018 New York Times Article stated that “in Long Island City, Queens, where Queensbridge’s 96 aging buildings are home to a mostly black and Hispanic population with a median household income of $15,843, well below the federal poverty line for a family of four.”

What does Zone 126 do?

Zone 126 coordinates partnerships with local and national service providers from the time a child is born (cradle) to the time a young adult graduates from college and enters the workforce (college and career). This is known as our Cradle-to-College-to-Career pipeline. Through our partnerships we are collaboratively offering a myriad of services that include early childhood, literacy, STEM (science, technology, engineering and math), mental health, career exploration, and college counseling amongst other needed support services.

While the core of Zone 126’s work is in coordinating partnerships we have identified two areas in which our schools have a service delivery gap, and they are in:

1.     decreasing chronic absenteeism (improving attendance) and

2.     mentoring.

What is chronic absenteeism?  

Across the United States, schools enroll more than 76 million students, yet each day, millions of seats remain empty, awaiting the arrival of students who do not show up day after day. “Chronic absenteeism is typically defined as missing 10 percent or more of a school year—approximately 18 days a year, or just two days every month.”

What is mentoring?

Mentorship can be felt in three specific areas of a young person’s life: 1) education, 2) daily life and 3) career. As it relates to education, “mentoring has had  significant positive effects on two early warning indicators that a student may be falling off-track:

1. high levels of absenteeism and

2. recurring behavior problems. 

Zone 126 is seeking to hire an Attendance Success Mentor Coordinator for one of our Neighborhood Community Schools in Astoria, Queens. This position will be based at Long Island City High School which is a 9th through 12th grade high school. 

What is a Community School?

Community Schools are a strategy to organize resources and share leadership to integrate social services into the fabric of schools.  Community Schools are equipped to better serve the needs of families so that students come to school ready and able to learn with the long-term goal of being college and career ready.

Community Schools offer a holistic approach toward improving academic performance driven by strong, collaborative partnerships among principals, parents, teachers and CBOs.  In Community Schools, parents are real and active partners in their children’s education, the school climate is joyful and positive, expanded learning opportunities are standard, and integration is key towards alignment of school day goals.

What is a Zone 126 Neighborhood Community School?

Zone 126 is building cradle to career Neighborhood Community Schools by linking together three high-need schools that span Pre-K through 12th grade to support the students and families living in New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) Astoria Houses and within the surrounding blocks.

Position Summary:

The Attendance Success Mentor Coordinator must be a passionate, dedicated, committed, and ambitious individual that has a go-getter attitude and who will have the following duties as their primary function:

1.     Increasing Student Attendance

2.     Decrease Chronic Absenteeism

3.     Increasing Parent & Family Engagement and

4.     Supporting Program & Service Coordination for students who are chronically absent.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Attendance Support

1.     The ASMC will make phone calls and do home visits to families of students who are chronically absent or late to school. This person hired must be comfortable interacting with students and families, as well as being out in the field throughout the five boroughs.

2.     The ASMC will work with students and families to develop plans to support the increase of individual student’s attendance and decrease absenteeism and lateness on a weekly, monthly and yearly basis at school.

3.     The ASMC will develop a creative system to support celebrating students who increase attendance on a weekly and month basis such as attendance improvement ceremonies, etc.

4.     The ASMC will help support the Community School Director (CSD) with attendance meetings, and presenting updates to all who sit on the Attendance Committee about progress in increasing attendance along with individual student needs for support.

5.     The ASMC will collect and maintain student attendance records for a caseload of up to 50 students.

6.     The ASMC will meet with students in small group settings and individually to assist them with their individual academic, career and personal goals.   

Increasing Family & Community Engagement

1.     The ASMC will work in collaboration with the CSD and the school’s Parent Coordinator around co-planning/co-leading parent workshops and events that engage parents in their child’s educational career.

2.     The ASMC will work to ensure that parents are aware of all of the program offerings the school has through the Zone 126 Neighborhood Community Schools approach, and connecting them to these resources.

Supporting Program & Service Coordination

1.     The ASMC will support the CSD to ensure that data collection efforts for each of the partner program is accurate and meeting benchmarks as outlined according to the NYC DOE.  

2.     The ASMC will ensure that students and parents are connected to programs to ensure target enrollment are met and/or exceeded.

3.     The ASMC will connect with programs and services to ensure they are aware if students are having challenges with lateness and attendance to ensure that service delivery supports student needs.


  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred in social work, education, public administration, or non- profit management but not required
  • 1-2 years working experience within a NYC public school, and/or education non-profit setting, specifically in the community school setting, after-school setting or within youth development, or doing home visiting (strongly preferred)
  • Working with a diverse population
  • Understanding of working in an office setting where confidentiality rules and regulations were place
  • Strong presentations skills (oral and written)
  • Ability to communicate the cradle to career/community school’s strategy through data to a variety of stakeholders (including school administration, faculty students and parents) connecting to support the overall development of the whole child
  • Results-oriented, and ability to be detail driven for the bottom line goal of student success
  • Ability to be a strong, firm communicator, but empathetic and understanding
  • Ability to communicate in Spanish (strongly preferred)

Organizational Relationships

  • Reports directly to the Community School Director
  • Close working relationship with school staff

Work Environment

  • The Attendance Success Mentor Coordinator will be based one to two days a week at:
  • Long Island City High School which is located at 14-30 Broadway Long Island City, NY 11106
  • Individual must be comfortable taking public transportation to do home visits outside of the immediate vicinity of the school setting.

Work Schedule:

  • Monday-Friday, generally 8:30am to 4:30pm (schedule subject to change, due to the nature of working within the school environment and attending events).
  • Some Saturdays and Sundays may be required based upon school, community, and organization needs

Salary: $35,000 to $40,000 (depending on experience)
