 POSITION OVERVIEW

SV@Home is seeking a resourceful, detail oriented, and proactive candidate to assist in the implementation of SV@Home’s approach to tenant protections, affordable housing preservation, and comprehensive anti-displacement policy solutions, all undertaken in an equity framework. This position reports to the Policy Manager. Due to the current pandemic, this position will work remotely until further notice.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 The Preservation and Protection Associate will be responsible for the following activities:

 Policy Development

· Research, write, and develop policy recommendations to further SV@Home’s work with protection, preservation, and equitable development policy issues.

·  Identify and support community solutions to respond to outdated land use and housing policies and ordinances that have resulted in racial and economic segregation, inequity, and patterned displacement.

·  Participate in convenings and on work groups that seek to address protection, preservation, and anti-displacement challenges and policy/program solutions.

 

Advocacy and Policy Implementation

·        Support advocacy strategies that activate the community around tenant protections and preservation of existing affordable housing in order to secure elected official votes

·        Support policy campaigns that target protection and preservation issues throughout Santa Clara County including, anti-displacement policies, city-level tenant protections for renters and mobile home residents, preservation programs, and homelessness prevention

·        Develop strong relationships with community based, racial and social equity organizations to coordinate responses that create opportunity and reduce inequities

·        Write and present recommendations to policymakers and city staff regarding protection and preservation-related policies, regulations, ordinances, codes, and legislation that impact vulnerable tenants, low-income families, and people at risk of becoming homeless, who are disproportionately people of color.

 

Partnerships

·        Develop and maintain relationships with key local and regional community organizations, policy experts, city staff, and elected officials.

·        Serve as a point of contact for policymakers and organizations on protection and preservation policy issues.

 

Communications and Engagement

·        Provide testimony at public meetings

·        Write content for the SV@Home blog, website, newsletters, email blasts, and social media posts that update the community about protection and preservation topics and issues.

·        Collaborate with the Communications Team to develop messaging that uplifts the voices of those who are most impacted by displacement, homelessness, and tenant abuses across Santa Clara County.

·        Provide ideas, content, and assistance in organizing SV@Home’s educational events

 EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, AND ATTRIBUTES

A competitive candidate will have the following experience and knowledge:

·        Bachelor’s degree in Housing and Community Development, Sociology, Political Science, or General Liberal Arts is highly desired, though relevant experience may be substituted on a year for year basis.

·        Direct experience in social justice, organizing, and/or movement building organization is required.

·        Must have a passion for housing and a demonstrated commitment to racial, gender, disability, economic and housing justice.

·        Must have a demonstrated capacity to build alliances and sustain collaborative relationships. 

·        An understanding of current housing issues and policies is highly desired.

·        Must possess excellent communications skills including outstanding writing and public speaking skills.

·        Must be comfortable and experienced in using social media tools for messaging and engagement.

·        Must have a start-up attitude, be well organized at handling multiple tasks, work well in a team environment, and have the ability to work under minimal supervision.

·        Must be flexible, nimble, and able to work well under pressure.

·        Must be available to work on some evenings and weekends.

Compensation

·        Starts at $60,000 annual salary: Negotiable based on experience and qualifications
