Solar One’s Green Design Lab™ Environmental Education Program


Solar One, a nonprofit leader in New York City on the cutting edge of sustainability programming, is seeking a part-time environmental educator to deliver in-school workshops for students as part of our K-12 education program- The Green Design Lab. The Green Design Lab (GDL) curriculum explores urban sustainability and climate through 5 units- Energy, Air Quality, Water, Food, and Materials. Lessons and activities are hands-on, student-centered and place-based. Activities include building solar-powered race cars, designing wind turbine blades, building homemade batteries, soldering DIY solar panels, and much more!


Solar One is currently seeking educators interested in working part-time during the spring (2-3 days/week, schedule can be flexible) delivering a combination of classroom and after-school programs. The Environmental Educator will shift to full-time (5 days per week) to deliver the summer program CareerCLUE from June-Aug 2020. 


Overview of Position:


  • Timeline: March 1-June 15, 2020 Deliver high quality and rigorous in-class Green Design Lab programs to K-12 NYC school students during the school year. In-school programs are typically 1-6 sessions long, one day per week, reaching up to 4 classes each day. Educators will deliver GDL curriculum and are responsible for all lesson materials prep and delivery. 
  • Deliver Green Design Lab STEM after-school programming in locations around the city.
  • Timeline: June 15-Aug 15, 2020 Deliver a 6-week intensive paid high school summer program focused on sustainability and green careers from July through mid-August. Program runs 9am-2pm. Location TBD. Educator will co-teach in the classroom with a DOE science teacher. 
  • There is a possibility of the position transitioning to full-time beginning in Fall 2020. 
  • Collaborate with the education team on program and curriculum design.
  • Track and record activities delivered to schools and teachers.



Qualifications

  • Requires a Bachelor’s degree and 1-2 years of K-12 education experience working directly with students.
  • Confidence and ability to manage a full class of high school aged students. 
  • Experience teaching science at a middle school or high school level.
  • Knowledge and capacity to teach about water quality, electricity, climate change, and renewable energy.
  • Experience working with English Language Learners and students with different abilities is a plus.
  • Ability to be self-directed, as well as work collaboratively.
  • Must be able to maintain a positive attitude and inclusive classroom culture.
