Political Research Associates is a progressive think tank devoted to supporting movements that are building a more just and inclusive democratic society. We expose movements, institutions, and ideologies that undermine human rights.
PRA is the preeminent progressive think tank that monitors and challenges the U.S. Right Wing. For 35 years PRA has built the capacity of social justice change makers to understand, adjust, and do battle with their organized adversaries on the Political Right. We are a broadly respected and trusted source of information and analysis among advocates, journalists, and academics alike, combining a social justice movement orientation with deep expertise on the key groups and individuals at the center of the Right’s new governing coalition, including the Christian Right/theocrats, white nationalists and the “alt-right,” economic libertarians, and Patriots and other right-wing forces.
At PRA our main objectives are to: 1) inform and strengthen the work of frontline social justice partners; 2) expose and isolate organized opponents of human and civil rights; and, 3) shape public debate of key issues, using our profile as a think tank to open space for partners to advance needed solutions. Distinct from some other “watchdog” organizations, social justice groups comprise PRA’s principal constituency. PRA is likewise unusual in having a broad focus across many sectors of the Right, from neo-Nazis to free-market neoliberals.

You are a talented nonprofit professional motivated to join a team of researchers invested in shifting power dynamics in the world through contributing knowledge and strategic engagement with social justice movements. Driven and committed to social justice, you have creative ideas about how to support knowledge production as a critical component of movements across a range of social justice sectors. You recognize that we have to respond to this moment of crisis, and plan ahead for what may come, even in the face of great uncertainty. The idea of helping build such a movement is what gets you out of bed in the morning. You are detail- and goal-oriented, a quick study for new ideas and technology, and thrive on building supportive relationships across diverse communities.
This position contributes to PRA’s overall mission by leading and supporting seamless fiscal, operational, and human resource management systems, procedures, and processes. The ideal candidate will be a seasoned, mission-aligned professional with specific expertise in fiscal management and fund accounting, human resources, social justice nonprofit management and governance, and IT/operations management. The Director of Finance and Operations is part of PRA’s senior leadership team and participates in strategic decision-making. Competitive candidates will also have excellent written and oral communication skills, and a keen interest in PRA’s mission. This is a full-time, salaried position with benefits, located in PRA’s headquarters in Somerville, Mass.
Duties and Responsibilities
The Director of Finance and Operations (DFO) has primary responsibility for overseeing all budget and fiscal functions, policies, and procedures. The DFO also oversees human resource functions, IT and systems, procurement, and facilities. The DFO supervises the Operations Manager.
• Lead the annual budget development process, monitor expenditures and variances, and proactively update income and expense projections;
• Work closely with other directors on development and tracking of departmental, program and grant budgets;
• Chart cash flow and ensure cash flow needs and adherence to Investment Policy;
• Prepare monthly and ad hoc financial reports for the Executive Director and the Board of Directors;
• Manage annual audit process and serve as the primary liaison with audit firm;
• Oversee tax preparation and filing;
• Supervise Operations Manager to ensure timely and accurate bookkeeping, bank deposits, receivables and payables;
• Negotiate, prepare, and monitor all vendor and consultant contracts;
• Perform all balance sheet reconciliations (bank accounts, investments, prepaids, deposits, accruals, depreciation, etc.) and prepare month-end close;
• Manage and track deferred revenue and maintain updated grid of release from restriction;
• Oversee grant and donor receivables and coordinate tracking with development team;
• Exercise final review for all organizational budgets, and final review and approval for all grant budgets and fiscal reports;
• Set up and manage people and systems to ensure adherence to restricted grant budgets, including periodic updates on budget variance and preparation of budget modification documents;
• Develop and manage general ledger and fund accounting systems and procedures, coding of payroll and other expenses to various programs through monthly cost allocations;
• Select, set up, and manage fiscal and payroll systems to ensure timely and accurate use and reporting;
• Serve as staff liaison to the Board Treasurer and Audit Committee; and
• Ensure all fiscal policies, procedures and documentation requirements are adequate to protect the organization and in compliance with state/federal laws and regulations.
• Oversee payroll, benefits administration, recruiting, on-boarding, off-boarding, employee check-ins and exit interviews, and other human resource needs;
• Responsible for all human resources (HR) functions including: hiring practices, employee review policies, professional development, staff retreats, organizational culture development and management, and other HR activities;
• Assure compliance with applicable HR, employment and personnel laws and regulations;
• Maintain updated personnel and operations policies and procedures and ensure compliance;
• Train and orient staff on personnel policies and procedures; and
• Oversee hiring and supervision of other finance and operations staff.
Operations, Technology, and Systems
• Oversee management and maintenance of all office systems and facilities;
• Develop and oversee document retention policies and manage disposal of records;
• Develop and oversee risk assessment and emergency planning policies and procedures, including digital and personal security;
• Oversee organizational insurance policies and ensure organization is adequately covered;
• Ensure emergency and security policies and procedures are understood and followed, including cyber-security procedures; and
• Oversee compliance with state and federal registration and reporting obligations, including state charity registrations.
Skills and Experience
• At least 15 years of professional experience, with a minimum of 10+ years of broad nonprofit financial and operations management experience;
• Able to set priorities and multi-task while maintaining accuracy and meeting deadlines;
• Excellent communications skills;
• Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and dedication to the mission of PRA;
• Ability to thrive as part of a team with diverse experience, expertise, identities, skills, and objectives;
• Ability to stand firm on essential accounting and fiscal compliance and documentation needs; and
• Bachelor’s degree; MBA or equivalent preferred.
