The Communications Coordinator will help to expand Earth Institute communications efforts, with an emphasis on managing community outreach events and opportunities. This includes coordinating Earth Institute presence at external events such as Earth Day NYC, World Science Festival, and Submerge Festival, and identifying additional opportunities to showcase Earth Institute experts, research, and programs at public events and through partnerships. The Coordinator will also work collaboratively with events managers to plan and execute Earth Institute and affiliate events, with particular responsibility for the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory Open House and appreciation events for staff, students, and interns. 

Working with colleagues from web and design, the Coordinator will consult on the production of outreach and event-related publications, emails, and websites; organize digital assets; and manage branded collateral. 

Supporting the Earth Institute Communications department, the Coordinator will help to facilitate partnerships and strengthen institutional prestige at the community level. General communications duties include assisting with the promotion of Earth Institute activities through social media, digital newsletters, blog entries, and multimedia. Additional responsibilities as assigned. 

Some early morning, evening and weekend hours will be required in this position. Event days may require standing for several hours, the ability to move event materials using a hand truck or cart, and the ability to lift items of up to 30 pounds.  

Excellent verbal and written communications skills, including strong conversational ability and comfort with public speaking. Comfort with and experience interacting with diverse, multi-generational audiences. This position will require frequent communication with students, staff, faculty and members of the public. 

Experience planning and managing events. 

Experience with social media.

Interest in the mission of the Earth Institute and demonstrated enthusiasm for sustainability and earth science. Preferred Qualifications 

Experience in an academic setting
