Hesperian Health Guides, non-profit publisher of Where There Is No Doctor and other health publications, provides information and educational tools to help people around the world take greater control over their health and lives, and works to eliminate the underlying causes of poor health. Since our founding more than 45 years ago, Hesperian has joined with like-minded organizations and movements to promote health justice on a global scale.

Hesperian seeks a full-time Writer/Researcher for a Hesperian initiative to produce resources on Epilepsy and Seizures. This new staff position will research, review and create draft materials for a short chapter for Hesperian’s New Where There Is No Doctor and an expanded book-length resource on epilepsy; work with an editor to refine the editorial vision, organizational structure and scope of the resources; and carry out this vision by developing the content for both print and online presentation. Joining existing global epilepsy-related networks and creating relationships with interested individuals and organizations is an integral part of this position.

Background: In the US, about 3 million adults and ½ million children have epilepsy. While medical treatment for seizures is fairly accessible, social understanding of epilepsy is limited, leading to stigma and discrimination. Globally, about 50 million people have epilepsy and seizures, of whom 80% live in low- and middle-income countries where about 75% get no treatment. There is a worldwide need for understandable, politically progressive materials, accessible to people with epilepsy, their family members, and their caregivers, which focus on the physical and especially social aspects of epilepsy and seizing. These resources will deal extensively with stigma and its effects, helping people effectively counsel family members, friends and neighbors, as well as organize to change discriminatory policies and practices regarding people who have seizures.

Responsibilities include:

The writer/researcher will be responsible for writing, research, and editing to generate a manuscript consistent with the editorial vision of the book. This includes work to:

  • Research and draft sections covering all aspects of epilepsy: its varieties, diagnosis, origins, treatment, stigma, relationship to violence, etc.
  • Oversee any research conducted and compiled by interns, contractors, staff, and volunteers.
  • Work with production staff and external artists to modify and develop illustrations.
  • Edit any materials drafted by co-workers, contractors, interns and volunteers.
  • Organize, coordinate and participate in processes for consultation and feedback regarding the drafts among Hesperian staff, community reviewers, and external expert reviewers.
  • Collaboration with editorial staff to evaluate feedback from internal, external and community reviewers and help create and implement editorial plans for revisions based on this feedback.

The writer/researcher will support the management of the process to develop the book. This includes work to:

  • Reach out to and build relationships with networks, organizations, and individuals involved with epilepsy and related health topics.
  • Collaborate with the editor to develop quarterly and annual work plans for the project, annual project budgets, and periodic progress assessments.
  • Manage expenses for the project according to and within the parameters of the approved budget. Participate in project budget reviews.
  • Support the editor in effective communication with the production staff.
  • Work with fundraising team to support the development of fundraising and reporting materials.
  • Represent Hesperian by participating in and presenting at events and conferences regarding epilepsy, and public health in general.
  • Participate in the development of other Hesperian publications, editorial, and staff processes as requested.

Qualifications:

Proven ability to research and write non-fiction in a popular, non-academic style.

The ability to accept and respond positively to editorial feedback.

The ability to work and build relationships cross-culturally.

Also appreciated: experience living outside the United States; fluency in languages other than English; experience with epilepsy; familiarity with global public health issues and institutions.
