Bilingual Power Organizer

Virginians Organized for Interfaith Community Engagement (VOICE) is hiring a Bilingual Power Organizer to help change the world for the better.

Join us to make an impact alongside inspiring leaders. A proud affiliate of the Industrial Areas Foundation (IAF), VOICE organizes to develop community leaders who have built and lead a powerful organization that acts and wins on some of the most important issues of our time. Our vision of a better world is one where all people have a seat at the table when decisions are made in our democracy. We believe that people—tenants, school parents, frontline workers, people impacted by the criminal justice system, and community members—have the best ideas about how to solve the most challenging problems.

We have a track record of organizing so that the ideas and voices of community leaders shape laws and policies in the areas of housing, good jobs, criminal justice reform, voting, immigrant rights, education, consumer protection, community development and more.

Qualities of a Successful Organizer

  1. Native intelligence: not necessarily degrees, but the ability to think, reflect, communicate, challenge the conventional wisdom, make judgments in complicated situations, and show flexibility.
  2. Anger and edge: not temper, not ideological fervor, not an abstract commitment to “the people,” but a clear sense of what’s wrong, impatience in the face of that wrong, and a drive to address it.
  3. Relationality, especially across race and culture: ability to build deep trust with people, especially people unlike oneself, people of other races, classes, orientations, faiths, etc.
  4. A track record: evidence, in high school, college, the local community or the workplace of attempting to relate to people and to respond to situations that seemed to demand responses; and some success in whatever field, career or endeavor has occupied the individual’s time.
  5. Hustle/Drive
  6. Curiosity
  7. Sense of Humor

Position Description

We are looking for organizers at many levels of experience including: 1) people just starting out in their careers, 2) mid-career people who are looking to make a lateral move into a new field, 3) experienced organizers who have the capacity to rapidly grow into the role of Lead Organizer/ Executive Director.

Responsibilities

The core duty is to identify, recruit and train leaders using IAF’s proven person-to-person organizing method, and to guide and support leaders in shaping and exciting campaigns to win on important issues. Organizers with VOICE are a mix of talent scouts, teachers and coaches, strategists, campaign researchers, policy nerds, scholars, campaign builders, drivers of action, evaluators, administrators, listeners, agitators, and team builders. Core responsibilities include:

  • Set up and conduct 20 one-to-one meetings per week (a focused 40-minute meeting with a person to build a relationship and to find leaders for public action).
  • Build organizing teams in 8-10 member institutions per organization.
  • Build and act on campaigns to win on issues.
  • Hold small group meetings via Zoom.
  • Use Google calendar, drive, sheets, docs, and gmail for communication, scheduling, and reporting.
  • Write a weekly report and participate in a weekly check-in with the Lead Organizer.

Depending on experience there are opportunities for growth around leading larger campaigns, supervising staff and becoming a Lead Organizer/Executive Director.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Salary, health care & retirement: Compensation will match experience and responsibility levels. We offer excellent benefits packages that include family health insurance, generous employer contribution to retirement (after first year 15% on top of salary), generous paid vacation, and paid holiday leave.
  • Opportunities to Grow: Organizing is one of the most challenging and also one of the most rewarding careers on earth. Every day is an opportunity to learn, grow and develop. We offer excellent professional development, coaching, mentoring and support for people to pursue their own passion in the work. There is no dead end to a career in organizing with the IAF.
  • Great team: Be a part of a team made up of interesting, smart, driven and diverse colleagues and leaders who are deeply committed to their own growth and the growth of each other. We take the work seriously but try to not take ourselves too seriously. We aim to bring humor and joy into our work together.
  • Position Location: We have openings at various locations in DC, Maryland and Virginia, as well as around the country. An organizer is not stuck behind a desk, but rather is meeting people where they are in congregations, schools, workplaces, neighborhoods, etc.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Fluency in both Spanish and English languages.
  • Residence in the Washington, DC area -- the job is full-time and mostly in-person (during non-COVID times).
  • One (1) or more years of experience in community organizing or community-based work.
  • Can meet deadlines and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Excellent personal accountability and follow-through.
  • People of color strongly encouraged to apply.

Closing date of positions: As soon as filled.

How to apply: Please send a 1-page story of self that tells us why you want to be an organizer, or why you became an organizer, and a specific story of how you have demonstrated some of the qualities VOICE's looks for in a successful organizer. VOICE will only review complete applications that include the 1-page story.
