Director of Professional Development and Publications

The Director of Professional Development and Publications oversees the association’s professional development facilitation and offerings, as well as all NAfME publications, juried and non-juried. Pursuant to these roles, the Director serves as staff liaison to the NAfME Professional Development Committee, and supports the music education higher education community, including the association’s two higher education societies (Society for Research in Music Education and Society for Music Teacher Education). Additionally, the Director serves as the association’s writer/facilitator for government grants and opportunities, with a strong focus on ensuring equitable access to music education.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Coalition Building

· In collaboration with NAfME Public Policy and Advocacy staff, develop, maintain and leverage relationships between NAfME and other groups or entities essential to the success of music education, including but not limited to Arts Education Partnership (AEP), National Coalition for Core Arts Standards (NCCAS), and State Education Agency Directors of Arts Education (SEADAE). 

Government Grant Development and Oversight

· Pursue funding for NAfME projects by serving as the association’s writer/facilitator for government grants and funding opportunities (with a strong focus on ensuring equitable access to music education), including researching, building relationships, writing and implementing grant projects and proposals.

· Oversee all government funded grants and opportunities for the association, including management, supervision, coordination, and financial management.

· Provide support to NAfME Business Development staff, including prospecting, proposal writing/project coordination, and annual campaign management.

Management 

· Coordinate closely with the NAfME Executive Director and with the association’s Directors, attending meetings and providing regular reports and updates.

· Other duties as assigned.

Professional Development 

• Serve as staff liaison to the NAfME Professional Development Committee working (in collaboration with the NAfME Equity Committee) to provide music educators and education leaders with engaging professional development and partnership opportunities, as well as resources to support proven practices and ensure equitable access to music education.

• Manage all professional development opportunities and resource creation for the field, including webinars, live events, written materials and recorded resources. Work in collaboration with NAfME Marketing and Communications staff to promote. 

• Facilitate NAfME’s online professional development platform, NAfME Academy, including generation of funding and management of affiliated vendors, funding partners, Learning Management System (LMS) platform, and oversight of professional development content creation (in partnership with the NAfME Professional Development Committee).

• Support the Society for Research in Music Education and Society for Music Teacher Education.

• Assist with facilitation of the association’s biennial Music Research & Teacher Education Conference, including serving as a staff liaison to governance leaders for the conference, and managing intake of conference proposals, scheduling, speaker procurement, and conference registration, in coordination with relevant NAfME staff.

Publications 

· Manage the association’s non-juried publication (including oversight for content), Teaching Music. Coordinate with association’s Marketing and Membership staff, as well as with contracted vendor and contributors.

· Manage the association’s juried publications, including the Journal of Research in Music Education, the Journal of Music Teacher Education, General Music Today, Music Educators Journal, and Update: Applications of Research in Music Education. 

· Coordinate with the editorial committees for all juried publications and manage the publication process both in-house and with contracted vendors. 

· Supervise and coordinate the production of all association publications, including juried periodicals, non-juried periodicals, and book publications in collaboration with contracted vendors, contributors, and subscription managers. 

· Supervise maintenance of copyright and ISBN/ISSN registrations for all NAfME produced materials, both online and in print.

Research and Policy Analysis

· Work in partnership with the association’s higher education members and NAfME Public Policy, Advocacy and Marketing staff to disseminate research that strengthens music education, particularly with regard to ensuring equitable access. 

· Advocate for, analyze and report (or have analyses created) on access to music education using data sets such as the Fast Response Survey System (FRSS) and Arts National Assessment of Educational Progress (in efforts to increase access to music education).

· Support surveys of members for the field in collaboration with the Society for Research in Music Education, including proposal review, acceptance, survey dissemination and inquiries from the field.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

· Supervises NAfME Editorial Communications Manager. 

BUDGET

· Responsible for budget development for the association’s professional development, biennial conference, and research areas. Coordinate budget review and development with the association’s Directors, Chief Financial Officer and Executive Director. 

QUALIFICATIONS

*Knowledge of music education professional development materials and models, including knowledge of trends in the field of education PD.

*Experience implementing professional development materials and models.

*Experience managing large conference and professional development events, both in person and online.

*Knowledge of online learning management systems.

*Experience developing and managing partnerships.

*Thorough knowledge of education and/or music/arts education research including data regarding access to music education, including how to synthesize, analyze, document and present findings.

Experienced and successful grant writer and manager, particularly with government grants and granting agencies.

*Excellent project management skills, including ability to establish priorities and accomplish goals.

*Excellent interpersonal communication skills, especially with regard to political, foundation and corporate leaders, directed at establishing relationships with those leaders in ways that materially support the mission of the association. 

*Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

*Excellent analytical skills, especially applied to professional learning, research review and fund development.

*Experience utilizing social media (Facebook, Twitter, etc.) as a communications tactic.

*Experience in building and working with coalitions, particularly dealing with educational policy and programming.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

*Bachelor’s degree in music or music education (Master’s or equivalent preferred).

*At least 10 years directly relevant work experience.  

*Supervisory experience, including working with volunteer leadership, staff, and contracted positions.

SKILLS

Language Skills:

· Ability to read, analyze, and interpret research articles and publications.

· Ability to respond to inquiries from members, stakeholders, regulatory agencies, or members of the academic, government and business communities. 

· Ability to write articles for publications that conform to prescribed style and format. 

· Ability to effectively present information, written and verbal to association leadership and public groups.

· Command of American English.

Mathematical Skills:

· Ability to perform basic computational functions.

· Ability to compute rates and percentages.

· Ability to understand basic statistical and graphical information, such as those used in policy research.

· Ability to create budgets and track expenses and income against budgeted projections.

Reasoning Ability:

The ability to analyze information and solve complex problems. Reasoning tasks involve skills such as: 

· Forming theories about the nature of, ideas, processes, and problem solving;

· Understanding subjects through analysis and evaluation;

· Ability to apply knowledge to problem-solving.

Computer Skills:

· Ability to use virtual meeting software and participate in meetings with both in-person and remote employees.

· Ability to interact with and use online learning management systems, association management systems, and other data management systems.

· Ability to use all Microsoft Office products.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

· Hold and maintain a Commonwealth of Virginia driver’s license or its equivalent.

· Able to be appropriately bonded.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

· Works ordinarily performed in an office environment (including home office).

· Travel as required – none currently, but potentially up to 15%.
