ABOUT FRESH YOUTH INITIATIVES (FYI):  FYI is a dynamic community-based organization that offers immigrant and first generation youth the tools, supports, and caring relationships that enable them to navigate transitions, connect to their community, flourish in school, and prepare for college and career.  Founded in 1993, FYI operates programs across five sites in Washington Heights/Inwood where 1,200 children participate in after school programs, summer camps, service learning, advisory, and mental health services.  As a result of community needs that arose during the pandemic, FYI transformed itself from a single service youth organization to a multi-service organization that bolsters fragile families through food relief, social services and mental health counseling.


ABOUT THE POSITION.   The Middle School Program Director is responsible to facilitate high-quality out-of-school time services at a school-based program in Northern Manhattan, serving with 80-100 children.  The Director will lead a team of group leaders and service providers with the goal of delivering high-quality activities and services in the areas of social-emotional learning, the arts, recreation, and literacy/STEM program.  FYI employs a whole child, strength-based approach that encourages children’s talents and interests while addressing problems or barriers that affect children’s healthy development. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS.  The best candidate is energetic and imaginative with an ability to create and implement programs and activities that provide a safe haven and enriched community for immigrant and first generation youth. The candidate should demonstrate skills in:  youth and parent engagement, school collaboration, team leadership, staff supervision, SEL, and positive youth development.

  

§  Master’s degree in Social Work, Education, or related field, preferred

§  Three years of experience in youth development field

§  Experience supervising staff, preferred

§  Experience creating and  implementing successful youth programs

§  Ability to understand the needs of the whole child and provide corresponding programs that address those needs

§  Ability to assure accountability to all stakeholders including government contractors

§  Flexible, sense of humor, find joy in working with youth

§  Spanish/English fluency required, and demonstrated cultural competence 


Program Director responsibilities include: 

§  Sustain the Program(s) as a safe haven and enriched community for youth; provide activities that integrate youth development, SEL, and academic instruction 

§  Design and implement innovative and effective instruction 

§  Conduct workshops and professional development sessions 

§  Oversee and coordinate whole child activities including, the performing and fine arts, sports and recreation that foster social-emotional learning, multiple intelligences, and personal growth 

§  Develop family activities such as Family Literacy Programs, and culminating events 

§  Meet with parents to develop strategies for children’s academic success 

§  Meet regularly with school personnel to review student progress, to adjust learning strategies, exchange observations, and coordinate school-day and afterschool content 

§  Hire, supervise, and evaluate full- and part-time staff, as warranted


Compensation: Excellent salary.  Benefits include health insurance, 21 vacation days per annum with fourth year increase to 24 days per annum, and professional development opportunities.
