Business and Operations Manager

The Benjamin Banneker Charter Public School in North Cambridge, a K1 through 6 th grade. School, is celebrating its 25 th anniversary this year. Banneker has been recognized as a high performing Massachusetts charter school. Our small school community includes 350 students from families in Cambridge and surrounding cities and towns; a team of dedicated and long tenured educators that have consistently delivered student outcomes well above the state average, predominantly serving families of color from many nations and circumstances, with many staff that have participated in the schools’ development and growth since its inception 25 years ago.

We are seeking a Business Manager :

● who has an interest/knowledge in public education,

● enjoys working around highly motivated long tenured colleagues,

● who can quickly understand the complex range of financial management services and requirements of a charter school

● who understands and appreciates a very diverse and inclusive culture focused on being both anti-racist and open to many perspectives

● who understand the use and application of technology to support operations (financial and other)

● who can supervise budget development, financial planning, payroll, accounting,

transportation, food service and other operating areas that have a financial impact on the school

● who can build out systems, creating and improving processes. These processes are

broad based including procurement and facilities maintenance.

● who will be able to grow in the position to shape the administrative profile of a highly successful school.

● who can demonstrate, through past experience, education, referrals and prior training, that they are highly qualified to be appointed to this key position

● who can take a lead role in the conduct of relationships with lending institutions, the financial community, vendors and the Department of Education and other government agencies maintaining fiscal records, providing data and information as well as filing all statutory reports.

● Who will report directly to the Executive Director as a key member of her team.

The ideal candidate will possess the following:

● Bachelor’s Degree with sufficient experience (Master’s Degree in Business highly

preferred)

● At least 3-5+ years of experience as a Business Manager, Business Analyst, Accountant, CFO, Director of Operations, business consultant or related positions that demonstrate financial management exposure and experience, ideally from a school setting.

● Be proficient to advance in the Microsoft Office platform (Excel, Powerpoint, Word), understanding of data systems typically found in schools, (proficiency in Powerschool is a plus), proficiency in Quickbooks and other accounting software.

● Ability to multitask in a role that is fast paced, ambiguous and demanding while still driving the vision of the school forward.

● An understanding of the specific and unique characteristics of public charter schools

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

● Fiscal Accountability/Compliance • Provide support to ensure the school remains in compliance with all federal and state requirements.

● Ensures appropriate invoice payment amount and correct funding source in accordance with all Federal, State and/or Local laws depending on the source of funding.

● Manages all budgetary appropriation to ensure funds are spent appropriately in a timely manner and for the intended purpose.

● Prepares all statutory reports associated with State, Federal and Local funds.

● Responsible for quarterly financial certifications etc.

● Attend Board meetings and be prepared to answer any financial questions.

● Present financials if the Treasurer is not present. and lead quarterly meetings

● Work with executive director to ensure that staff has the required state training,

● Manage finance and oversee the audit function to ensure school is maximizing funding.

● Human Resources Oversight

● Conduct phone interviews

● Distribute and review all new hire paperwork with new employees

● Present on an annual basis new hire orientation to all incoming staff members focusing on school and state policies and benefits.

● Collect, manage and maintain all personnel records.

● Manage HR and Benefits Administration for staff, including, but not limited to disability claims, benefit changes, salary increases, leave balances, etc.

● Manage Data Service Center and attendance and payroll needs.

● Oversee the payroll function including absence deductions and garnishments.

● Create employment contracts for new hires and returning staff

● Monitor and communicate the certification requirements for all teachers

● Participate and ensure successful audits.

● HR files only • Ensure that we receive the proper funding for staffing

● Communicate daily with staff regarding HR policies and procedures

● Maintain and update Staff Handbook

● Maintain and update Department of Labor regulations.

● Conduct exit interviews and maintain the data via staff survey or other platform.

● Maintain FMLA paperwork and manage the rollover time Required Skills

all levels of internal and external stakeholders

● Ability to work independently – determining areas of need and addressing them without much oversight

● Be self-aware and know how to treat all members of the school’s community with respect, appraise

COMMITMENT AND COMPENSATION:

● Length of Work Year: 12 months; occasional evening and weekend commitments

● Salary and Benefits: Salary range is commensurate with qualifications and experience as it relates to our salary scale.

● Salary range: $ 65K to $ 78K commensurate with experience
