The Financial Clinic has demonstrated a “gold standard” model for building financial security for working poor families. A high-performing organization with a focus on results, the Clinic has put over $80 million back in the pockets of more than 48,000 customers, supported more than 420 organizations in 38 states and districts embed financial security actions into their program models, and successfully launched several policy campaigns in support of working poor families. A landmark national study shows the Clinic’s model of financial coaching helps working poor families move toward financial security.
The Financial Security Ecosystem is a “best practice” model, where financial security is first “baked into” partners’ services and programming to create financial security at scale, as well as accelerate their impact. Where front line staff surface issues, the ecosystem includes Financial Coaches and personal finance attorneys who assume responsibility for customers’ problems, and whose internal support boosts the skills and confidence of the front line staff.
Reporting to the Clinic's Senior Financial Coach, a Financial Coach has the following key responsibilities:
- Hold 20 meetings per week with lower-income New Yorkers, helping them combat financial insecurity.
- Record customer information and meeting progress data precisely, accurately, and on time.
- Facilitate Financial Coaching workshops for small groups of customers, on occasion.
- Tell engaging customer success stories, verbally and in writing.
- Actively contribute to the Clinic's advocacy and policy work as well as to Change Machine, the Clinic's social enterprise and all-in-one Financial Coaching platform.
- Maintain good relationships with partner organizations of The Financial Clinic, and be open to forming relationships with new coaching sites or referral partners.
- Bachelors degree preferred. Major in a field related to financial coaching (e.g. economics or finance but also psychology or behavioral economics) a plus.
- Two years' professional experience (ideally in a related field such as coaching/counseling, sales, or finance).
- Self starting--You do whatever needs to be done (and more) with little supervision.
- Superb written and verbal communication skills, and strong interpersonal skills.
- Exceptional organization and process management (i.e. starting multi-step projects and seeing them through to completion).
- Bottom-line focus--You should be excited about working at a goal-driven and quantitative organization.
- Proficiency with Google and Microsoft suites (e.g. Google docs and MS Excel).
- Willingness to work with and support vulnerable populations such as people at-risk of homelessness and survivors of domestic violence. (Note: the financial coach provides financial coach to these populations. First-level support such as safety planning is provided by onsite case managers.)
- Spanish language proficiency in a second language.
