As a research and action organization, Center for Policing Equity (CPE) produces analyses identifying and reducing the causes of racial disparities in public safety. Using data-driven approaches to social justice, we use science to create levers for social, cultural, and policy change.

 Position Description

The Center for Policing Equity (CPE) is looking for an experienced Communications Manager with a passion for social justice issues. The Communications Manager will support and execute a communications strategy to advance CPE’s work in social justice and equity. The Communications Manager will need to be both proactive and reactive to communications needs, while working towards the ultimate goal of raising awareness and heightening the impact of CPE’s programs and initiatives with the broader public. CPE will also look to the Communications Manager to serve as a Subject Matter Expert on communications-related efforts and staff development. 

This position will initially report to the Portfolio Manager of Field Engagement.

Key Responsibilities 

• Manage and execute a comprehensive communications strategy that includes traditional media, digital media, web, and other creative content
• Oversee and track CPE content creation and brand development, covering organization-wide content needs (e.g., fact sheets, brochures, data visualizations) as well as campaign- or program-specific content items (e.g., media plans, social media)
• Manage social media platforms and posts (e.g. Twitter, Instagram, Clubhouse), engage with online community, and grow overall follower base
• Monitor daily media and KPIs using technology platforms; modify communications activities, as needed, to optimize for effectiveness
• Identify and connect the appropriate CPE team members for any communications, public relations, or press requests; prepare and support Subject Matter Experts for communications-related requests
• Liaise with and provide direction to strategic partner organizations whose work is tied to communications
• Develop and track quantitative and qualitative metrics associated with CPE’s communications efforts
• Review and edit any external-facing printed materials (e.g., press releases, reports)
• Other communications support as needed

Qualifications (required)

• Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (e.g., journalism, communications, public affairs)
• Five (5)+ years of progressive experience in Communications or PR at a fast-paced and growing organization
• Experience with Communications or PR directly related to racial and social justice issues
• Experience executing a strategic communications plan that targets multiple audiences and leverages traditional, digital, and social media platforms
• Superb written, digital and verbal communication skills; ability to tell bring disparate audiences together around an inspiring story and compelling messages
• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to develop and maintain strong relationships; up, down, across, and externally
• Highly organized and systematic, with superb attention to detail and the ability to prioritize and complete tasks with a high degree of accuracy
• Ability to seamlessly transition between high-level strategic thinking and tactical execution
• Ability to work independently and elicit trust in judgment (can make trusted recommendations) with support from the SVP of Field Engagement
• Ability to quickly adapt to a growing organization
