For 40 years Nevada Legal Services (NLS) has strengthened communities across Nevada by ensuring fairness and providing equal access to justice.  We are a non-profit legal aid organization providing free legal services to low income people in every county in Nevada.  Our primary source of funding is through a grant from the federal Legal Services Corporation. 

The primary focus of the Outreach Coordinator position is to educate low-income Nevadans living with HIV/AIDS as part of our HIV/AIDS Impact Project.  The Outreach Coordinator will also be primarily responsible for collaborating with other service providers in the community to organize and conduct outreach to Nevadans living with HIV/AIDS across northern Nevada.  Duties include (but are not limited to): conducting outreach in rural areas on a regular basis, requiring occasional overnight/multi-day travel, performing client intakes, preparing community legal education materials, assisting attorneys with cases and potential litigation, communicating with community organizations and other service providers, referring individuals to other agencies and attorneys and any other duties as necessary.   This position requires flexible hours (evenings and weekends) and a willingness to travel across northern Nevada.  Applicants must be willing and able to travel extensively.  Preference will be given to applicants with a demonstrated commitment to social justice.

Job Responsibilities:

• Develop a monthly outreach plan and conduct outreach activities throughout Nevada

• Conduct community education workshops and know-your-rights trainings

• Interview potential clients to ascertain the services/assistance they may require

• Facilitate referrals to appropriate legal or social services providers as needed

• Conduct intakes to determine eligibility for legal assistance

• Develop and distribute bilingual outreach material (e.g. fliers, pamphlets)

• Participate in community outreach events

• Serve as a visible and proactive liaison between NLS and our allies, including service providers, advocates, community-based partners, and grassroots organizations

• Regularly attend inter-agency and/or community meetings to become familiar with available services, and to coordinate with local organizations, service providers and advocates

• Properly maintain outreach reports, timesheets, mileage reports, and reimbursement requests


Requirements: 

• High school education, G.E.D., and/or equivalent training and/or experience. 

• Ability to communicate effectively in Spanish is a plus

• Excellent oral and writing skills

• Excellent presentation skills and public speaking, ability to communicate both verbally and in writing

• Excellent analytical and organizational skills.

• Demonstrated skills in basic computer and software operation (MS Windows, MS Office, Internet navigation, etc.)

• The ability to work productively and efficiently with minimal supervision.

• Ability to work independently and as a part of a team

• Able to work in a fast-paced environment under tight deadlines

• Must have access to personal vehicle, own insurance, a valid Nevada driver’s license, and willingness to regularly travel throughout the state of Nevada

• Flexibility to work evenings and weekends, including overnight travel, and accommodate an irregular work schedule

• Ability to establish and maintain effective and cordial working relationships with state and local agencies, other employees, and clients

• Outstanding interpersonal skills

• Demonstrated past commitment to advocacy work is preferred.

• Dedication to and experience in serving low-income populations

• Demonstrated cultural sensitivity and ability to work with diverse cultures

Level of Language Proficiency
