The Bronx Defenders (BxD) – an innovative, progressive, holistic indigent defense office in the South Bronx – seeks an experienced and energetic professional to serve as the Managing Director (MD) in our Finance Department.


BxD is a public defender non-profit that is radically transforming how low-income people in the Bronx are represented in the legal system, and, in doing so, is transforming the system itself. BxD seeks thoughtful, creative, energetic individuals with a strong commitment to social justice to join our dynamic and diverse staff. Our staff of over 350 includes interdisciplinary teams made up of criminal, civil, immigration, and family defense attorneys, as well as social workers, benefits specialists, legal advocates, parent advocates, investigators, and team administrators, who collaborate to provide holistic advocacy to address the causes and consequences of legal system involvement. Through this integrated team-based structure, we have pioneered a groundbreaking, nationally-recognized model of representation called holistic defense that achieves better outcomes for our clients. 

Each year, we defend more than 20,000 low-income Bronx residents in criminal, civil, child welfare, and immigration cases, and reach thousands more through our community intake, youth mentoring, and outreach programs. Through impact litigation, policy advocacy, and community organizing, we push for systemic reform at the local, state, and national levels. We take what we learn from the clients and communities that we serve and launch innovative initiatives designed to bring about real and lasting change.

Role & Responsibilities

The Managing Director of Finance has overall financial management responsibility for the organization and must develop and implement strategies for the continued financial health of the Bronx Defenders. In addition to the procedural responsibilities in this role, the MD of Finance is responsible for the overall management of the Finance Department, including developing strategy and goals; effectively managing department workforce to keep them aligned, focused, motivated, and high-performing; reporting on the department’s progress toward goals to other Practice Heads and to entire staff as necessary, and modeling the Bronx Defenders values of an inclusive and respectful workplace while encouraging the same from their staff.  

The MD of Finance reports to and partners with the Chief Operating Officer and works closely with the other Practice Heads in addition to overseeing the work of the Finance staff. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Strategy And Management Of The Organization’s Finances

  • Oversees and directs treasury, budgeting, audit, tax, accounting, grants administration, and risk management activities. Communicates and implements the overall financial strategy
  • Oversees (develops, monitors, and revises) short- and long-term budgetary planning and cost management in alignment with the Bronx Defender’s strategic priorities; works closely with all Practice Heads to monitor and develop the organization’s budget 
  • Proactively manages cash flow and forecasting and oversees financing strategies. Ensures maximization of accounting software 
  • Provide strategic recommendations to the Chief Operating Officer based on financial analysis and projections, cost identification and allocation, and revenue/expense analysis
  • Ensures organizational compliance with all regulatory tax filings and audit requirements; coordinates annual audit activities
  • Designs and implements fiscal policies and procedures (internal controls) and ensures that staff maintains financial record systems in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles
  • Support the Chief Operating Officer in engaging the board’s audit and finance committees around issues and trends in financial operating models and delivery
  • Generates and distributes accurate monthly, quarterly and annual financial reports for the Chief Operating Officer, Senior Management Staff, Board of Directors and other audiences as required

Development Department Support

  • Manages all aspects of the collaboration between Finance and Development
  • Assures that all technology needs are met to enable best and greatest fundraising results
  • Works with Director of Strategic Partnerships and their staff to prepare grant requests, and report on funds received
  • Oversees the work of the Finance staff to ensure that accurate records of gift pledges, restrictions, and use of donated funds are maintained

Organizational Risk Management

  • Maintains appropriate insurance coverage for employees and office space, including Professional Liability, Fiduciary, Commercial Property, Travel, and other policies as appropriate, and immediately notifies carriers of all potential claims in order to mitigate risk
  • Develops, communicates and implements Document Retention policy within the Bronx Defenders
  • Serves as a trustee on the 401k plan, annually reviewing plan design and investment programs and is responsible for the timely annual filing of Form 5500


  • CPA and/or Master’s degree in Business, Economics, Finance, Non-Profit Management or other related field preferred or equivalent 15 years’ experience in nonprofit finance
  • Eight to ten years of broad finance experience, including experience with budget planning and management for a nonprofit organization, managing annual audit process, and experience in a leadership capacity
  • Experience with management and billing of city and state government contracts
  • Experience examining, developing, reengineering and recommending financial and technical policies and procedures
  • Demonstrated excellence in managing finance, accounting, budgeting, control, and reporting
  • In-depth knowledge of Sage Intacct software preferred
  • Results-oriented with superior skills in organization, planning, and attention to details 
  • Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills, with experience interpreting a strategic vision into an operational model 
  • Excellent active listening and communication skills

 This position is full time and requires 40 hours of work per week. 

Salary is commensurate with experience. For candidates with 8-10 years of directly relevant experience, the salary range for this position would be approximately $145,000 to $160,000. Full-time employees are also eligible for a comprehensive benefits package including but not limited to medical, dental and vision coverage; a 403(b) plan with employer contribution; a generous vacation, sick leave, and parental leave policy. More specific information about salary and benefits will be provided when and if an offer is extended.
