Director of Community Programs

This full-time position is directly responsible for the management, supervision, and operation of a wide range of Community Programs, including the Volunteer Program, the Youth Mentoring Program, the Emergency Food Program, the Sunrise Senior Activities Program, Information and Referral Services, and additional community initiatives and events spread over the course of the year.


To align Community Programs with the agency’s mission and Theory of Change; to employ volunteers strategically in this effort; to build relationships throughout the community that strengthen this effort; to offer comprehensive, wrap-around support services for the families who use the agency’s core programs; to promote civic and community engagement throughout the agency.

Working Relationships:

The Director of Community Programs will report directly to the Senior Director of Community Programs. The Director will supervise a team of Community Program’s Associates, AmeriCorps service members, and volunteers.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Sunrise Senior Activities Program

  • Coordinate and facilitate bi-weekly programming that addresses social isolation, health and wellness, and aging in place – assisting our community’s senior population to continue to live vibrant, healthy lives
  • Lead senior group through planned activities, including a monthly planning and voting process and monthly outings
  • Coordinate exercise classes one-time per week for the seniors group as part of the Young at Heart program
  • Take attendance at all meetings and conduct semi-annual evaluations; record all data in Efforts to Outcomes (ETO)
  • Establish and foster positive relationships with all members of the group to monitor their ups and downs
  • Keep in contact with all participants who are no longer able to attend group meetings, for health or other reasons
  • Expand overall program participation in accordance with Theory of Change and funders

Emergency Food Program and Information and Referral Services

  • Offer basic support services to families within the core programs, including emergency food, infant necessities, and assistance with benefits applications; make referrals to outside agencies as needed
  • Supervise the Community Programs Associate who coordinates the Emergency Food Program, including both a bi-weekly Food Pantry and four monthly Free Farmers’ Markets (Roosevelt Towers, Harvard Place, Miller’s River, and Truman Apartments), mobile pantries that are held at public housing sites
  • Supervise AmeriCorps VISTA in charge of volunteers and information/referral services and maintain ongoing relationship with VISTA, including all required documentation and payments
  • Train agency staff in the basics of case management with families within core programs
  • Record all attendance data and referrals in Efforts to Outcomes
  • Submit monthly and quarterly reports

Youth Mentoring Program

  • Supervise the Mass Mentoring Partnership (MMP) AmeriCorps Ambassador of Mentoring and maintain the ongoing relationship with MMP, including all required documentation and payments
  • Lead the coordination of the Middle School Youth Mentoring Program expansion, including recruitment and orientation efforts
  • Lead the coordination of the High School Youth Mentoring Program pilot project, including orientation and match support
  • Attend and participate in all Youth Mentoring Program evening meetings as the East End House staff liaison

Volunteer Program

  • Manage the agency’s volunteer program, in partnership with the AmeriCorps VISTA and Community Programs Associate, including recruitment, intake, orientation, training, placement, support, recognition, and evaluation for regular volunteers
  • Take the lead in orienting and supervising all group volunteers, including agency partners and funders during their corporate days of service
  • Coordinate the MIT Reach Out program, including liaising with relevant partners at MIT, and program directors
  • Enter all volunteer data into Efforts to Outcomes
  • Expand overall volunteer impact on the agency, with a focus on STEM volunteers, senior volunteers, and academic support volunteers, in alignment with the agency’s Theory of Change

Additional Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and supervise the annual Thanksgiving Basket Giveaway, MLK Day of Service, Community Ice Skating Party, Summer Block Party, East Cambridge Clean Up Day, and other family engagement/community events
  • Serve as an ambassador for East End House in the community; represent East End House at various community meetings, including the Outreach Committee, the Community Engagement Team (CET), and other local initiatives
  • Support civic engagement, family engagement, and service learning efforts across the agency
  • Hire and supervise a team of staff who help facilitate the agency’s Community Programs
  • Participate in Director meetings, helping with both short and long-term strategic planning for the agency
  • Assist in grant writing for Community Programs funding


  • Must demonstrate a genuine passion for community organizing, community youth development, and working with populations often denied access to vital human services due to social or economic barriers
  • Must be skilled and passionate about developing and implementing senior, youth, and community programs
  • Must have excellent organizational, management, and interpersonal skills, as well as strong written and verbal communication skills and team building skills
  • Must be able to utilize planning time effectively and consistently produce top quality results
  • Must be an excellent problem-solver who can balance multiple tasks and responsibilities
  • College degree in related field required; Master’s degree preferred
  • Must be a positive ambassador for East End House in the community
  • Must complete at least twenty hours of professional development training per year
  • Must attend all required staff meetings and trainings
  • Must adhere to the East End House policies and procedures
