Project Hearts is a grassroots non-profit aimed at community empowerment, and this role could offer you the chance to cultivate your leadership skills as you help grow the organization to meet the evolving needs of Baitoa.

Project Hearts is on a mission to educate the people of Baitoa so that they might have the knowledge & resources needed to transform their own communities and enhance their quality of life. We’re looking for a highly capable Executive Director to help us increase our impact & effectiveness. 

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director (ED) will have responsibility for the overall strategic and operational functions of Project Hearts’ staff, programs, expansion, and execution of its mission. Key duties of the ED include overseeing the organization’s administration, programs, strategic planning, fundraising, marketing, and community outreach. Above all, he or she will be comfortable in a leadership role that demands clear communication, integrity, and decisiveness.


Requirements and Qualifications

• Desire to provide quality programs & services that will help to sustainably develop the communities of Baitoa, DR and improve the quality of life for residents

• Bilingual in Spanish and English (both written and spoken)

• At least 5 years of experience working in a management or leadership position

• Experience working with a non-profit organization & knowledge of related management & leadership principles

• Strong computer skills, including use of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, MailChimp (or comparable programs) and basic tech repair/troubleshooting

• Solid organizational & time-management skills, including planning, delegating, program development and task facilitation

• Strong public speaking ability

• Strong written, visual, and verbal communication skills

• Multidisciplinary project skills

• Past success working with a Board of Directors with the ability to cultivate new & existing board member relationships 

• Ability to envision and convey the organization’s mission & strategic future to a wide range of stakeholders and cultures

• Experience developing & implementing new programs based on community needs

• Unwavering commitment to quality programs and data-driven program evaluation

• Strong financial management skills, including budget preparation, analysis, decision making and reporting

• Experience setting budgets and ensuring adherence to them

• A history of successfully generating new revenue streams 

• Ability to establish relationships with individuals and organizations of influence, including funders, partner agencies and volunteers

Preferred Skills and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree or higher in business administration or related field

• Experience working or living in a culture not native to you

• Knowledge of myriad topics, especially public health, women’s empowerment, healthy masculinity, W.A.S.H. (water access, sanitation, hygiene), environmentalism, mental health, construction, small businesses, community development, etc.

• Familiarity with rural, developing communities, especially in Dominican Republic

• Permission to work legally in the Dominican Republic


Primary Job Responsibilities

Leadership & Management – 

Inspire Board of Directors & staff to achieve the organization’s mission through programmatic excellence.

• Actively engage & energize staff, volunteers, board members, funders, and program beneficiaries

• Develop, maintain, and support a strong Board of Directors that is actively involved in the strategic operations of the organization

• Manage a culturally diverse staff whose skills, cultures, and spoken languages reflect the communities being served

• Develop, lead, coach & retain a high-performance management team

• Oversee hiring & retention of competent, motivated, highly qualified employees & volunteers by providing career coaching, education, and personal development

• Recommend timelines & resources to successfully accomplish program goals

• Ensure implementation of effective systems to track organizational & program progress

• Work with Program Manager to regularly evaluate program components for successes & obstacles

• Sign notes, agreements, and letters on behalf of the organization

• Ensure organization’s compliance with all applicable legislation


Strategic Planning – 

Work closely with the Board of Directors in order to fulfill the organization’s mission through its programs, strategic planning, and community outreach.

• Collaborate with the Board to develop short- & long-term strategic plans that will guide decision-making 

• Ensure programs & daily activities are supporting the fulfillment of the organization’s mission

• Communicate effectively with the Board

• Provide all information necessary for the Board to function properly & make informed decisions

• Monitor & analyze indicators of programmatic success

• Report regularly to the Board on important matters, especially successes, risks, and obstacles

• Coordinate & attend every board meeting


Financial Performance & Viability –

Responsible for fiscal management that anticipates operating within the approved budget, ensures maximum resource utilization, and maintains the organization in a positive financial position.

• Create annual budgets & submit to the Board of Directors for approval

• Work with Accountant to continuously monitor financial trends to ensure financial stability and create monthly & yearly financial statements to submit to Board

• Ensure fiscal responsibility & integrity in use of organization funds

• Coordinate & lead monthly, quarterly, and yearly budget reviews with appropriate staff

• Discern & advise or decide which requests for aid align with organization’s mission & available resources


Fundraising & Communications –

Develop sufficient resources & revenues to ensure the financial health of the organization and meet or exceed strategic goals & objectives.

• Set & meet aggressive annual fundraising goals by securing financial support from foundations, corporations, individuals, and governmental institutions

• Work with staff and Board to generate funding from new sources

• Build relationships with individual donors, funding organizations, and grant-giving foundations

• Design & implement appeal campaigns to garner donations from new & existing donors

• Write & submit grant proposals to foundations 

• Enhance the organization’s image by being active & visible in the community

• Develop partnerships with other professional, civic, and private organizations

• Regularly publish program results – both quantitative & qualitative – to key stakeholders via social media, newsletters, email campaigns, and annual reports

• Deepen & refine all aspects of communications, from web presence to external relationships, in order to create a stronger brand & garner new opportunities

• Plan special fundraising events


Volunteer / Mission Trip Coordination –

Facilitate the deeper engagement of volunteers & donors in the mission of Project Hearts by hosting groups for week-long service trips.

• Communicate with volunteers to schedule trips and ensure receipt of required forms & payments

• Coordinate arrangements for food, transportation & lodging, including relevant payments & purchases

• Schedule work projects based on community needs

• Plan recreational outings to Santiago & the beach

• Translate for volunteers & locals to facilitate the cultural enrichment of both

• Accompany volunteers as they travel throughout Baitoa to teach them about the educational, financial, and societal limitations faced by residents
