Position: Summer Camp Counselor - multiple positions available

Compensation: $17 per hour

Type: Temporary, full-time

Start/End Dates: Tentatively June 28-August 23: camp runs tentatively July 5-August 20; staff will participate in a one-week orientation prior to the start of camp and a one-day post-camp wrap-up. We will set a start date for camp once New York State provides full guidance for summer camp operation

Schedule: Applicants must commit to work throughout the entire summer camp program, including orientation and wrap-up and be available to work Monday - Friday between the hours of 8:30AM and 5:30PM.

About Us: Harlem Grown’s mission is to inspire youth to live healthy and ambitious lives through mentorship and hands-on education in urban farming, sustainability, and nutrition.

Our Farms & Facilities: Harlem Grown operates three soil-based urban farms, four school gardens, and one hydroponic greenhouse, and is currently building a new soil-based farm and hydroponic facility and opening a new Youth Center at Riverton Square. Our offices and properties are located between 122 and 151 Streets in East and Central Harlem, Manhattan.

Our Programs: Harlem Grown provides youth and community development programs focused on urban farming, wellness, and sustainability. Our youth-focused programs include intensive school partnerships placing sustainability mentors in three public schools, as well as educational farm tours, summer camp, a Saturday leadership program, and a workforce development program for at-risk young adults. Our community development programs include wellness workshops, special events, commercial and community food scrap collection for composting, and fresh farm produce distribution to participants, volunteers, and neighborhood residents.

Job Overview: Harlem Grown is hiring enthusiastic, high-energy Counselors for our Summer Camp program. Counselors will work with Harlem Grown programming staff and the Program Director to lead and supervise daily group activities that will include farming, cooking, and crafts within their assigned group of similar-aged campers. Counselors are responsible for the general safety, growth, and skill development of the campers in their group.


Responsibilities:

● Lead daily summer camp activities and curriculum, including hands-on farming, cooking, and arts & crafts activities, in a fun, passionate, and educational manner that emphasizes teamwork, respect, and positive behavior

● Supervise campers by following all safety guidelines put forth by Harlem Grown and the New York City Department of Health in regards to summer camp operation, including but not limited to being responsible for each camper’s safety and whereabouts at all times

● Supervise campers in their group on field trips and ensure camper safety while traveling

● Meet the social, emotional, and experiential needs of each camper in your group

● Be willing and able to modify camp activities and schedules appropriately to respond to camper needs and any changes or situations that arise

● Coordinate with the Program Director and other Harlem Grown programming staff to ensure a smooth, safe, and fun camp experience for all campers

Qualifications:

● Demonstrated experience working directly with children in an educational or recreation setting, with previous summer camp experience strongly preferred

● Knowledge of and experience in teaching about food systems, agriculture, nutrition, urban farming and/or gardening preferred

● Extremely high-energy, with strong skills in group management

● Adaptability to quickly respond to challenges and changing situations

● Ability to communicate with families about their children’s experiences and needs

● Cultural competency to work with low-income children and families from a wide variety of cultural backgrounds

● Bilingual in English and Spanish a plus

● Must be at least 18 years of age.


Requirements Upon Hire:

● All counselors must be willing to undergo CPR and First Aid training, provided by Harlem Grown

● All counselors must present a letter from their physician stating that they are healthy enough to work in-person all summer while COVID is a risk

● All counselors must be willing to abide by the following COVID protocols:

○ Wear a mask covering both the nose and mouth at all times while in camp, unless actively eating or drinking

○ Complete a daily health screening questionnaire, including temperature taking

○ Quarantine for four days if experiencing any COVID symptoms or if close contact has been made with a known COVID case, and only return to camp upon receiving a negative COVID test and providing proof of this test to the Program Director

○ Agree not to travel outside of New York State, New Jersey, or Connecticut for the duration of camp and the camp training period and for two weeks prior to the start of camp, if unvaccinated; if vaccinated, agree to provide proof of vaccination and only travel outside of these states with prior permission from the Program Director

○ Get tested weekly for COVID

● All Counselors must be comfortable working in-person daily while COVID is still a risk
