About Actuate

Actuate is a new kind of nonprofit, formed to contribute a fresh approach to society’s critical challenges. We aspire to create fresh, practical, potent approaches that address make-or-break problems and help put us on a course to a better future.

We know the U.S. innovation ecosystem can create technology revolutions and world-leading basic research. But it isn’t directly addressing many of our most important problems for the decades ahead: climate change, the erosion of democracy, access to opportunity for every person, and population health. A full and vibrant innovation capacity with new insights, new methods, and new actors aimed at these problems can help turn the tide of the complex challenges we face.

Actuate’s work is to catalyze this future by designing and running solutions R&D programs that create breakthroughs. To this task, we bring broad innovation experience and a track record of delivering results with high-risk, high-payoff experimental programs. We’re currently defining our first programs and building partnerships for the work ahead. Our focus today includes climate change mitigation, data privacy, and renewing our democracy.

As we set out to realize our aspirations, we are looking for team members who are excited to join an early-stage nonprofit startup, are passionate about systems-level change for our critical challenges, and are eager to help set Actuate up for game-changing success.

The Role

As a rapidly innovating organization eager to take on society’s most pressing challenges, we have ambitious fundraising goals. We see a seminal, catalytic role for philanthropy in initiating a new innovation ecology suited for the must-solve problems of our times, by taking on the early risk of trying new methods for R&D and developing effective approaches that other sectors can adopt and scale. We are seeking an experienced and motivated Development Manager to work closely with Actuate’s leadership team to build on our early fundraising success. The Development Manager will play a key role in accelerating our fundraising efforts and securing the funds needed for the development stage of our core programs.

The Development Manager will report to the CEO and work in close collaboration with the senior leadership team to manage an existing pipeline of institutional supporters and find new funding opportunities. This role will require strong project management, research, grant writing and donor communication skills to support our fundraising efforts with foundations and high-net-worth individuals. The ideal candidate has experience in a nonprofit fundraising team helping to build and manage a portfolio of donors, has excellent communications skills, responds quickly to changing conditions, and is a team player willing to jump in on tasks of any size. This is a dynamic opportunity for someone who is a builder seeking to bring big, bold ideas to life.

Key Responsibilities

Support the CEO to strengthen relationships with a pipeline of current and potential funders, including:

  • Cultivating and maintaining strong relationships with individuals and foundations through regular correspondence
  • Maintaining excellent follow-up and long-term stewardship plans
  • Drafting/ghostwriting emails when appropriate
  • Prepping the CEO for donor meetings with meeting briefs
  • Overseeing and managing donor-related information in a spreadsheet (and eventually a CRM)

Partner with the CEO to expand Actuate’s funding base, by:

  • Researching and scoping new potential funders
  • Tracking donor interests by staying on top of philanthropic news and trends
  • Finding unique ways to engage with networks of new supporters (through small, targeted events or conferences)
  • Tapping into an existing base of prospects through Actuate’s extensive network

Generate content that persuasively outlines Actuate’s vision and progress, by:

  • Writing and revising concept papers, grant proposals, and grant reports
  • Crafting and critiquing pitch decks and materials for meetings with donors and prospects

Build the appropriate systems for the long-term success of the development function, including a system for maintaining donor records, and tracking grant deliverables and budgets to provide accurate reporting.

Essential Criteria

  • 5-7 years of relevant experience on a nonprofit fundraising team.
  • A startup mentality – understanding that priorities may shift, but the overall goal of building a fundraising engine for Actuate will remain consistent.
  • Experience cultivating and securing institutional grants of $500,000+, and managing the stewardship process for a portfolio of donors.
  • Ability to manage complex projects and multi-task with excellent organization skills.
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Comfort communicating with funders of all kinds and sharing impact in a compelling way.
  • Comfort with a fast-paced environment and changing requirements.
  • High computer proficiency; very capable in Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
