About the Organization
For more than three decades Canal Alliance has been the leading service provider and community advocate for Marin’s low-income, Spanish speaking immigrant community. Today the organization reaches more than 3,500 people a year, who face multiple challenges. Canal Alliance has developed a wrap-around program model to help people escape the cycle of poverty. Canal Alliance provides adult and youth education; behavioral health services and immigration services. Programs are successful in moving vulnerable members of this target population, who have fled their home countries to escape poverty and/or persecution, from crisis to stability – and to achieve self-sufficiency.
About the Position
Canal Alliance provides community-based, culturally and linguistically competent behavioral health services for the Latino community in Marin County. Our unique Behavioral Health program provides a continuum of services including a Spanish speaking Behavioral Health clinician who provides brief interventions and group support, case managers/coaches who provide para-professional behavioral health support and community health workers (Promotoras) working in the community to educate the community about behavioral health issues and help people access resources.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The Behavioral Health Coordinator (BHC) is a member of the Family Resource team and the Behavioral Health services team. The Behavioral Health Coordinator works closely with family support staff at Canal Alliance, North Marin Community Services and West Marin Health and Human Services. The BHC also provides support to clients identified by the Latino Connection Promotora team. The BHC provides behavioral health support to low-income, uninsured Spanish speaking community members. This work concentrates on immigrant trauma with a focus on psycho-education, motivational Interviewing, the development of healthy coping skills and stress reduction. The service design reflects the cultural norms of the Latino community we serve. Services include individual and/or family brief interventions and group services with a focus on problem solving and coaching.
BHC provides the following services:
- Provide case consultation, training and support to the family resource staff at Canal Alliance, North Marin Community Services and West Marin Health and Human Services
- Assessment of all clients referred for behavioral health risks or symptoms
- Facilitate support groups, including psycho-education and skill building for individuals experiencing PTSD symptoms, parents and victims of domestic violence
- Conduct individual and family sessions including psycho-education, coping skills, communication skills
- Provide referral and links to further services as needed
- Participate in agency leadership activities
- Assist in researching and identifying unmet needs and gaps in providing human services to Canal residents
- Maintain relationships with agencies providing service to Canal residents, and work with them to meet clients’ needs
- Serve as CA representative at inter- and intra-agency meetings as needed
- Maintain records and data for evaluation purposes
4. Knowledge, skills and abilities

- Highly skilled in active listening, empathy, Motivational Interviewing and basic counseling
- Strong Behavioral Health background
- Group facilitation skills
- Bilingual/Bicultural in Spanish/English
- Significant experience working in immigrant communities
- Knowledge of casework objectives, principles, techniques, methods, and caseload management
- Knowledge of community resources, public social service and assistance programs
- Knowledge of interviewing and record keeping techniques, including the documentation of all actions and contacts in case files
- Basic knowledge of the effects of stress
- Ability to engage client in the problem-solving process
- Must be able to function with minimal supervision, follow directions, handle multiple tasks simultaneously, and manage stressful situations effectively
- Ability to get along with people and establish cooperative working relationships with staff at all levels both within and outside the department
- Must possess exemplary customer service skills
- Must possess strong communication and organization skills
- Proficiency in word processing, spreadsheet, database, presentation and e-mail software.
5. Education and Experience Requirements
- 2 years of experience in program area
- Bachelor’s Degree required
- Master’s Degree or equivalent experience
- Exceptional advising / problem solving skills
- Experience working with Latino, immigrant or low income communities
- Bilingual/Bicultural in Spanish/English
- Experience working with Salesforce
- Certified in Motivational Interviewing
Schedule will be determined by needs of clients.
This is a full-time position with benefits.
