Project Coordinator, Bay Area Scientists Inspiring Students (BASIS)

Organization: Community Resources for Science (CRS) is a nonprofit organization based in Berkeley that helps teachers and scientists work together to bring science learning to life for elementary and middle school students in the Bay Area. We provide information, support, and training for K-8 teachers, and engage hundreds of scientists and engineers from academia and industry in volunteer outreach leading science lessons (virtually during the pandemic, in person when allowed) in schools.


Responsibilities: Oversee and assist with science outreach on the UC Berkeley Campus. Coordinate the recruitment, preparation, and placement of scientist volunteers through our Bay Area Scientists Inspiring Students program. Project coordinator will work with teams of UC Berkeley scientists (undergrads, graduate students, and postdocs) to develop and execute interactive science lessons in Elementary schools. Project Coordinator will work with the BASIS Program Managers to accomplish recruitment, preparation, and placement of volunteers. Coordinator will also reach out to new prospective teams of scientists to get them engaged in outreach.

All outreach programs are currently in virtual format; when covid safety protocols allow, we hope to return for in-person, in-school programs in 2022.

Specific deliverables may include:

  • Outreach and Volunteer Recruitment with scientists that CRS has an established relationship
  • Outreach to prospective scientists and their lab/cohort groups
  • Assist with lesson development, obtaining materials and assembling lesson kits, and training of new volunteers
  • Ongoing coordination with BASIS Program Managers for coordination of placement of volunteers in classrooms to deliver interactive science lessons, including communication with member teachers and current volunteers to schedule visits and distribute associated logistical information
  • Follow up, monitoring of post-placement evaluations; providing ongoing support and feedback to volunteers
  • Program documentation and evaluation, including photo and video documentation
  • Assist with Volunteer Appreciation and education outreach events


Qualifications

  1. Experience in science (lab/research/biotech/etc.) or science education
  2. Desired: Experience in training, STEM eduction outreach and partner relationship building.
  3. Project coordination experience
  4. Strong speaking & communication skills
  5. Strong written skills needed for developing marketing materials, training materials, and other communications with scientist volunteers and K-8 teachers.
  6. Ability to work independently and be self-directed
  7. Ability to lift and carry 20 lbs.

Preferred: 

  1. Experience and/or training regarding elementary science content and effective science teaching
  2. Previous volunteer recruitment and management experience or experience with volunteer management best practices
  3. Experience with Salesforce.com platform.

Job, when covid safety protocols allow full in person programs to resume, requires ability to travel to local workplaces and school sites. Access to car preferred.  

Schedule, Hours, and Salary: This is a part-time, fixed-term, contract position for 15-20 hours per week from September 2021-August 2022, with possibility of extension. Work is conducted during the standard work week; however candidates should have a flexible schedule to accommodate the varying needs of partner employers, volunteers and teachers. Hourly rate $20-$22, DOE.
