Position Overview:

Founded in 2011, WEEMA International is a US-based nonprofit with the mission to empower Ethiopian communities through clean water access, education, economic opportunity and health care – all driven by local leadership and community collaboration. Our committed team consists of 7 Board of Directors, 4 US-based staff (including the Founder/Executive Director), and 80 Ethiopian staff working in-country.

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Managing Director will play a critical role in all aspects of US operations needed to support an internationally-focused NGO. Responsibilities will include supervising US-based staff, fundraising, cultivating donors, submitting and managing grants, and providing financial oversight. In addition, the Managing Director will support programmatic work by assisting in the development and implementation monitoring and evaluation systems.


1.      Overall US Office Management

a)  Manage all aspects of operations at US headquarters

b)  Supervise US-based staff

c) Coordinate with consultant team-  financial management, human resources, fundraising and communications strategy

d) Work closely with Executive Director for Board of Directors meeting preparation and planning

e) Manage and supervise volunteers, interns, etc.

f) Write and edit policies, manuals, job descriptions, etc. as needed

g) Oversee general administrative tasks in US office (mail, bills, internet, etc.)

h) Support internal organizational communication systems (Workplace by Facebook)

2.      Financial

a) Support development of annual budget

b) Provide budget oversight- both US and Ethiopian budgets

c) Monitor finance systems, support annual audit

3.      Development

a)     Oversee the design and implementation of a comprehensive fundraising plan

b)     Oversee online donor management systems- current software system used Bloomerang, may consider migration to Salesforce in future

c)      Generate donor reports

d)     Lead donor cultivation and outreach strategy 

e)     Lead donor stewardship plan and coordinate portfolios with appropriate staff/board

f)      Develop and support peer-to-peer fundraising with Classy

g)     Organize fundraising events (major annual event- Team-a WEEMA Falmouth Run)

4.       Marketing and Communications

a)  Develop high quality marketing materials as needed

b)  Develop high quality content for weekly e-blasts, blog posts, social media, newsletters, annual reports, etc.

c)      Organize fundraising events (major annual event- Team-a WEEMA Falmouth Run)

d)     Update and manage website

e)     Speak publically about WEEMA at events, fundraisers, conferences, etc. as needed

5.      Grants Administration

a)     Research potential grant opportunities

b)     Manage grant application process including writing, editing, and submitting applications as needed

c)      Manage grants portfolio including timely reporting as required

d)     Steward relationships with grant funders as needed

6.      Programs- Development, Implementation, Monitoring and Evaluation

a)     Provide input and insight into programmatic work

b)     Support M&E implementation and online data management systems

c)      Interpret, analyze and present data as needed

d)     Write and/or edit impact reports as needed


  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree preferred (or equivalent experience)
  • Minimum 10 years related professional experience, international development experience preferred
  • Previous non-profit fundraising/development experience preferred
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Excellent writing skills
  • Excellent organizational skills with ability to multi-task
  • Ability to collect, manipulate, and interpret data
  • Creative and entrepreneurial mindset
  • Passion for international development work
  • Significant international travel
