    Overview

About Abortion Fund of Ohio (AFO)

Since 1992, Abortion Fund of Ohio (AFO) has provided financial, emotional, and logistical support to individuals accessing abortion care in Ohio and beyond. Rooted in Reproductive Justice values, AFO not only offers direct services but also works to empower communities through judicial bypass assistance and community education. With a growing $2M+ annual budget and a passionate team, AFO is at the forefront of ensuring abortion access remains a reality for all who need it.

    The Opportunity

AFO is seeking a dedicated and values-driven Director of Development to design and lead our comprehensive fundraising strategy. As a key member of our leadership team, this individual will strengthen existing efforts and implement new approaches to support the organization's ambitious growth and deep commitment to our mission.

The ideal candidate is a dynamic relationship builder with demonstrated success in nonprofit fundraising and a passion for advancing abortion access. You’ll work closely with the Executive Director, staff, and the Board of Directors to engage AFO’s community of supporters and meet aggressive fundraising goals, ensuring our ability to provide life-changing support to thousands of individuals each year.

    Key Responsibilities

    Strategic Leadership

    • Develop and execute a multi-faceted fundraising strategy to meet and exceed the annual $2M+ budget, aligning with AFO’s goals and values.
    • Drive sustainable growth by identifying and leveraging new revenue streams while nurturing existing sources.
    • Lead the organization’s “big picture” fundraising vision while actively engaging in donor-facing work and development operations.

    Major Donors

    • Cultivate and manage a portfolio of 40–60 major donors ($5,000+), building meaningful, long-term relationships.
    • Partner with the Executive Director on donor engagement strategies, including research, solicitation, and stewardship.
    • Implement strategies to prospect new major donors, including donor-advised funds.

    Annual Donors and Campaigns

    • Collaborate with communications staff to design and execute fundraising campaigns, including annual campaigns like the Fund-a-thon.
    • Develop creative strategies to raise 150% of annual budget projections through donor-centered campaigns.
    • Grow AFO’s monthly donor base and deepen relationships with grassroots supporters.

    Grant Writing & Management

    • Research, identify, and apply for new foundation grants and family foundation opportunities.
    • Manage all aspects of grant writing, tracking, and reporting, ensuring alignment with organizational priorities and compliance with funder requirements.
    • Collaborate with the Executive Director and Finance Manager to allocate grant funds effectively and align budgets with donor restrictions.

    Events

    • Oversee development-focused events, from intimate cultivation gatherings to larger fundraisers, ensuring events meet engagement and revenue goals.
    • Manage and execute the Clothing Swap, AFO’s annual event, implementing new strategies to maximize revenue raised.

    Board & Staff Collaboration

    • Inspire and support the Board of Directors to serve as active ambassadors and fundraisers for AFO.
    • Collaborate with staff across departments to articulate programmatic priorities and develop compelling donor narratives.

    Systems & Reporting

    • Ensure donor contributions are accurately recorded, acknowledged, and stewarded in a timely manner.
    • Partner with the Executive Director and Finance Manager to maintain fiscal accountability and transparency, including budget development and financial reporting.

    Qualifications

    • Passion for strengthening abortion access and working towards full reproductive health care for all.
    • Commitment to and understanding of Reproductive Justice and experience supporting low-income and BIPOC communities.
    • Minimum five (5) years of development/fundraising experience, including experience in nonprofit organizations.
    • A minimum of five years of experience in major gift solicitation ($25,000 minimum) and/or fundraising leadership for a nonprofit with a budget of $1M or more.
    • Experience with many types of fundraising: grants, direct mail, events, digital campaigns, major donors.
    • Ability to translate big-picture, long-term strategies into written plans and presentations, and confidence in communicating and advocating for those plans both internally and externally.
