East Yard Communities for Environmental Justice (EYCEJ) is an environmental health and justice non-profit organization working towards a safe and healthy environment for communities that are disproportionately suffering the negative impacts of industrial pollution. By providing workshops & trainings, EYCEJ prepares community members to engage in the decision-making processes that directly impact their health and quality of life.


Position Overview


East Yard Communities for Environmental Justice seeks an experienced Media Organizer. This individual will play a key role in the organization’s strategic dissemination of information, organizing efforts, social media development, content creation, and work to secure and expand earned media on newspaper, television, and radio outlets.


The Media Organizer will report to the Director of External Affairs and work across programs and campaigns to implement and maintain digital organizing tools for campaigns, programs and advocacy campaigns, and organizing drives. Ideal candidate will have a strong background in communications and experience with earned media.


Responsibilities


  • Take the lead on digital organizing efforts and manage our proliferating array of digital organizing tools, including NationBuilder, WordPress, Sales Force, and Google Suite. Research and implement new tools as needed and keep up with trends and best practices to ensure our messaging is aligned with populations we serve.
  • Lead communications efforts across campaigns, programs, and advocacy efforts.
  • Play a major role in coordinating and developing the organization’s social media platforms, including helping to devise and implement campaigns, engaging with followers, advertising, and outlets in media.
  • Help develop and maintain social media accounts and campaigns for the organization’s various units and work with and train organizers, members, and Board to build engagement and reach out to prospective new members.
  • Under support from the team, be able to generate engaging e-blasts, consistent messaging, and social media content.
  • Ensure our database is up to date with contacts from organizers.
  • Work to secure interviews on traditional news outlets (radio, print, and television).
  • Create relationships with journalists and reporters to grow visibility of our programs, campaigns, and organizing efforts.
  • Ensure press advisories, press releases, and news worthy work is communicated to external media (radio, television, print).
  • Other duties as needed.
  • Engage with community members to develop their own media and communications skills and knowledge.


Desired Qualifications


  • At least three years experience with digital organizing tools including CRM and email and text platforms.
  • Experience working with data systems, including the ability to convert data from various sources into preferred formats, extracting reports and data, and troubleshooting data-related problems.
  • At least three years experience using Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube and social media management tools on behalf of an organization, including fluency in performance metrics.
  • Fluent in written and spoken Spanish.
  • Strong writing and editing skills, especially pertaining to social media and email.
  • Creativity and the ability to generate ideas and execute them.
  • Ability to manage workflow and to work independently as well as collaboratively.
  • A passion for social justice and advocacy.
  • Digital accessibility experience (i.e. can craft communications around needs of all users regarding sight needs, hearing needs, language needs, etc.)
  • Connections to earned and traditional media.
  • Ability to organize press conferences and media interviews.
  • Knowledge of broadcasting agencies in the Los Angeles County region.
  • Knowledge of local (East LA, Southeast LA, Long Beach) environmental health issues.
  • A sense of humor and the desire to work in a positive and supportive environment.
  • Knowledge of Adobe Suite is preferred but not required.
  • This position is not completely remote, and will require some in-person engagement with media and community members, so candidates must be able to have quick turnarounds for travel.
