Census Organizer - Part Time

About the Census Complete Count Fund:

To support a fair and complete 2020 census count, NMIC is working in partnership with the City University of New York (CUNY), Mayor de Blasio’s NYC Census 2020 office, and the New York City Council to mobilize New Yorkers to self-respond to the 2020 census. NMIC’s team, composed of the Census Captain and six Census Organizers, will be canvassing high traffic areas and events in our community where they are likely to connect with hard-to-reach individuals and will specifically focus on the following high need neighborhoods: Morris Heights, Highbridge, Claremont, and Mount Hope while also supporting the Washington Heights, Inwood and Hamilton Heights areas. We will support this focus by basing most or all team members out of our Bronx Office at 8 Clinton Place. With these efforts our goal is to count 12,000 community members.

 NMIC is seeking exceptionally qualified candidates for the role of Census Organizer. Census Organizers will: educate community members about the significance of the census and the importance of census self-response; identify and dismantle barriers to census participation; ask and encourage New Yorkers to self-respond to the 2020 census; and connect them to the tools and resources they need to self-respond.

 Responsibilities:

 Working under the leadership of NMIC’s Census Captain, the Census Organizer will:

  •  Build strong relationships with historically undercounted New Yorkers in order to encourage census self-response;
  • Engage New Yorkers about the census through a variety of activities, including canvassing, tabling, phone-banking, text-banking, town halls, teach-ins, and other types of events;
  • Track census engagement activities using both qualitative and quantitative methods;
  • Adhere to all data security and privacy protocols around census engagement;
  • Participate in trainings and professional development opportunities;
  • Provided assistance to volunteers in the Washington Heights and Hamilton Heights NOCCs;
  • Support volunteer recruitment and training activities.

 Qualifications:

  •  Experience in community engagement, campaign work, or other forms of direct outreach;
  • Excellent communication, project management, and multi-tasking skills;
  • Excellent interpersonal and relationship management skills;
  • Demonstrated cultural competence with respect to Latinx and Immigrant communities;
  • Understanding of New York City’s diversity and experience working with people of diverse backgrounds;
  • Proficiency in use of technology such as laptop computers and tablets;
  • Proficiency in written and spoken Spanish.

Salary/Additional Information:

The salary for this position is $20/hour. This is a part time (20 hours/week) short term position from February 18th, 2020 until June 30, 2020 and is not benefits eligible.  There are six (6) openings available for this position.

NMIC IS AN EQUAL EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY EMPLOYER:
