Community Legal Aid (CLA), the free civil legal services provider for the low-income and elderly residents of central and western Massachusetts, seeks a Staff Attorney to work in its Hampden County (Springfield) office. The attorney will assist clients seeking Social Security and SSI benefits and will also specialize in handling cases for students involving Individualized Education Programs, school discipline (including suspensions and expulsions), language access, and other issues specifically affecting low-income students. The attorney will conduct community outreach and education to inform parents, students, and other stakeholders about education-related legal rights and responsibilities. The attorney will also assist in the preparation of periodic grant reports and may attend outreach visits with potential funders.
QUALIFICATIONS: Seeking an attorney who is a self-starter, works collaboratively with partners, and is comfortable with and adept at public speaking and conducting community outreach. Admission to Mass. Bar or entitlement to practice under a Mass. practice rule is required. At least 1-3 years of experience representing clients in education law cases involving issues affecting low-income students, students with disabilities, and/or other marginalized or vulnerable students is required. Proficiency in Spanish is a plus.
