Federal Defenders of New York, Inc. (FDNY) has an opening for a full-time Investigator.

 

FDNY is a nonprofit organization providing criminal defense services to indigent persons charged with federal crimes throughout New York City, Long Island, and several counties north of New York City. We have offices in Manhattan, Brooklyn, White Plains, and Central Islip. The successful candidate will primarily work in the Manhattan office but frequent travel and a flexible schedule are required.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

The purpose of this position is to secure information from various sources, such as, verifying documents, evidence, interviewing clients and witnesses; report findings; and, assist attorneys in their trial and sentencing preparations.  Specifically an investigator:

·        Analyzes and evaluates facts and evidence and ascertains relevant information

·        Locates, interviews and evaluates prosecution, defense and expert witnesses, alleged victims, experts and law enforcement personnel 

·        Locates and gathers records, reports and documents

·        Reviews and analyzes disclosures, discovery and other case documents

·        Serves subpoenas

·        Visits and recreates alleged crime scenes

·        Writes comprehensive reports 

·        Testifies for court motions, trials and other hearings

·        Plans the scope, timing and direction of investigations

·        Evaluates witnesses and discusses relevant value with the attorney

·        Looks for surveillance or take pictures on site

·        Identifies, finds and assists expert witnesses as needed. 

 

Ideal Candidate

We are seeking someone who will serve as a critical part of our defense team, demonstrating initiative, creativity, self-motivation, tact, and discretion. They can communicate effectively orally and in writing. They are able to establish and maintain good working relationships with a wide-range of agencies, and people from diverse backgrounds and circumstances. They effectively coordinate, plan and carry-out investigation strategies. They also assist attorneys with exhibits, witnesses and other tasks. They must be familiar with legal processes and be computer literate. Some cases have classified documents and the investigator may have to undergo an FBI background check to obtain a government security clearance to have access to classified information. Spanish language or other language skills, and video/audio editing and CAD experience are desirable. Education in relevant fields is preferred.

 

Minimum Qualifications

·        A bachelor’s degree or higher or equivalent experience

·        Three years of progressively responsible criminal investigative experience

·        Familiarity with Microsoft Office, Adobe Pro and a working background in OSINT

·        U.S. Citizen or permanent resident

·        Have or can acquire a valid driver’s license

·        Can meet the requirements of a background check or a government security clearance

·        Able to travel frequently

·        Able to work a flexible schedule

At least USD 72,402

FDNY’s salaries are consistent with the federal pay scale (based on years of experience) with excellent benefits (e.g., health, dental, vision and employer-sponsored retirement contributions. ). The pay range for this position is $74,702-125,817.
