Heights and Hills provide older adults and their caregivers with the services, support, and information they need to age in place – in their own homes and neighborhoods in Brooklyn. Our mission is to promote successful aging in the community. Founded in 1971, today we are one of the largest providers of social services for older adults in Brooklyn, serving more than 4,000 older adults and their families annually. We provide case management for the homebound, information and support services to families caring for an aging loved one, run a community center for older adults and operate a robust volunteer program. Role

The Friendly Visiting Coordinator (FVC) Assistant will report to and directly assist the Friendly Visiting Coordinator in the daily operation of Heights and Hills’s highly regarded Friendly Visiting Program. Recognized as a key strategy for combating the negative health consequences of social isolation, the program matches community volunteers with homebound and/or frail, isolated older adults for weekly social visits and friendship. The FVC assistant will work under the supervision of the Friendly Visiting Coordinator and Volunteer Program Director to provide oversight and perform all tasks associated with the program. The ideal candidate is a dynamic, self-directed, team player with exceptional people skills and a commitment to volunteerism, civic engagement and programs promoting social connectivity and wellbeing for older adults. Must be at ease engaging older adults, and volunteers of all ages; must be comfortable travelling to a variety of Brooklyn neighborhoods to recruit volunteers and meet with homebound older adults in their own homes. This position requires regular data entry and meticulous record keeping. Sense of humor and perspective are desired as is a willingness to pitch in where needed to support our full complement of volunteer programs.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct home visits and intake assessments of potential program participants to determine eligibility.
  • Maintain and expand recruitment sources to ensure a steady influx of diverse volunteers, this includes attending outreach and community events in program catchment area.
  • Field volunteer inquiries and oversee the volunteer screening process by conducting initial volunteer interviews, reference checks, and orientation/training.
  • Support coordinator in maintaining matches.
  • Make quarterly check-in calls to provide ongoing support to matched volunteers and seniors; and to regularly update volunteers and seniors waiting to be matched.
  • Support the planning and execution of annual volunteer recognition events and other events as needed.
  • Attend external monthly Friendly Visiting Coordinators meetings and internal Case Management meetings and in-service as needed.

Skills Required

  • Two plus years of experience recruiting, screening, training, and managing volunteers.
  • BA degree in Human Services, Social Services, Communications, Management, Non-profit Leadership, Public Administration, or related field required.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; a proven ability to effectively communicate with diverse audiences of all ages with sensitivity to the needs of older adults.
  • Proven public speaking and workshop facilitation skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and to use appropriate discretion.
  • Strong data management and record keeping skills; exceptional attention to detail; experience with STARS/PeerPlace data management system a plus.
  • Cultural sensitivity: ability to work effectively with a diverse staff, volunteers, clients, and community partners.
  • Reflective, thoughtful team player who is willing to give and to receive candid feedback.
  • Experience and comfort working with Excel, and Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to utilize public transportation, willingness to travel within Brooklyn.
  • Ability to climb stairs.
