Join us for a transformative service experience by investing in youth, supporting families, building community, and fostering resilience.
The AmeriCorps Community Service-Learning Fellowship is a one-year service-learning opportunity through UMBC's The Choice Program, The Shriver Center and AmeriCorps. We have several exciting opportunities for Fellowships based in the Greater Baltimore area as well as in Howard County, Prince George's County and Montgomery County.
The mission of The Choice Program is to invest in youth and engage families who are in need of supportive services. The mission is accomplished using a community-based approach which:
• Identifies and links the youth and families with social supports;
• Fosters caring relationships;
• Develops high expectations; and
• Provides meaningful participation.
This commitment offers AmeriCorps Fellows the chance to gain a wealth of experience in the fields of education, case management, youth development, human services, and social justice. During a service year, Fellows establish networks in the nonprofit and public sector and, most importantly, make an impact on the lives of youth. Fellows carry out the mission of The Choice Program and maintain a high level of commitment to service and their teammates. Fellows are supported by a structured training program to develop their leadership in human services. Due to the nature of the workflow and youth needs, Fellows must be flexible with their schedule, which goes beyond a 40-hour work week.
There are three different programs:
-Department of Juvenile Services: This program aims to keep youth out of detention centers and connected to their communities. This is carried out through providing opportunities for youth to meet probationary requirements, including community service activities and monitoring of curfews. (Locations: Baltimore City, Baltimore County, Prince George’s County, Howard County, and Montgomery County)
-Department of Social Services: This program aims to keep youth out of foster care and preserve the family. This is carried out through family activities and informal family mediation. (Locations: Baltimore City)
-Choice Jobs: This program aims to give young people the opportunity to carve a unique pathway to employment success in a supportive environment, with access to resources and opportunities they may otherwise not be afforded. This program utilizes a three-part model of curriculum-based job-readiness training, on-the-job training at social enterprise sites and supported job placement. (Locations: Baltimore City)
RESPONSIBILITIES: Working within a team model, AmeriCorps Fellows share case management responsibilities for youth including client intake and assessment interviews, establishment of goal-oriented service plans, classroom support recreational outings, as well as informal counseling and mentoring, outreach, and daily home visits and monitoring.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's degree in any field; Strong verbal and written communication skills; Ability to work individually and with a team; Ability to maintain a flexible schedule to include evenings and weekends; Possesses legally registered vehicle, valid state driver's license and required insurance; US Citizen or Permanent Resident.
$24,930 living allowance with health benefits and mileage reimbursement. Eligible for AmeriCorps Educational Award of $5,920. May be eligible for loan forbearance.
