Program Summary

NSC’s Food Access program provides support to about 100 families per month, and has a focus on culturally appropriate staples and fresh produce. As many as 80% of foreign-born households experience food insecurity, and immigrants may not feel comfortable accessing mainstream food pantries due to concern about immigration enforcement, as well as language barriers and limited knowledge of wider community resources. The population includes clients from a variety of countries with primary communities from Central America and Mexico, the Middle East including Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan and Africa.  

Position Summary

The Food Access Liaison position at Nationalities Service Center conducts provides food access support to vulnerable refugees and immigrants in the Greater Philadelphia region. The Food Access Liaison will carry out the day-to-day activities of providing food support to NSC clients in adherence to program and grant requirements.

The Food Access Liaison position has internal contacts with the entire administrative staff and external contact with clients, volunteers, representatives of other social services agencies and the community. This position has access to sensitive NSC and client information and is expected to handle such information with integrity and professionalism. This position is expected to represent NSC in a professional manner.

The Food Access Liaison will report directly to the Director of Program Operations and Quality Assurance, and will receive initial orientation from the Senior Manager of Health Access and Specialized Supports. The Food Access program is housed under the Health, Wellness and Stability department of NSC, and the Liaison will participate in department activities as necessary.

 

Essential Functions

  1. Food access – staff NSC’s Food Access services to connect clients with needed food support, including Tuesday food packing and scheduled food distribution hours at NSC and off-site
  2. Receiving food deliveries – receive deliveries of items for the food pantry and organize them for packing/client use
  3. Outreach and communication – Coordinate with clients and case managers around Food Access referrals/recertifications and access to program services, as well as connections to external food resources
  4. Coordination – Coordinate with volunteers assisting with food packing and distribution and delegate to Health Access/Food Access interns assisting with Food Access service delivery
  5. Partnership building – expand/continue partnerships for obtaining non-food items (eg. diapers) and culturally appropriate food items not available from large food banks (eg. bulk dried beans and lentils, tortillas) for NSC’s Food Access services 
  6. Documentation: Document Food Access activities through database entry
  7. Assist with training of incoming year-long volunteer, starting on August 19            

                                           

Non-Essential Functions

 

  1. Adheres to NSC’s security guidelines and ensures the appropriate handling of sensitive information.
  2. Facilitates and attends relevant health team and staff meetings to promote communication and execution of goals.
  3. Completes special projects specific to the function of the department or as needed for the department as directed by Supervisor.
  4. Other duties as assigned within the scope of position expectations.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities 

 

  • Basic understanding of NSC’s mission, vision, values, programs and services, and business plan.
  • Ability to lift 35 pounds and work on one’s feet for several hours at a time.
  • Knowledge of legal and political issues, and community resources and benefits that impact and/or benefit the targeted client needs.
  • Ability to effectively use standard office equipment.
  • Possesses strong interpersonal skills as demonstrated by compassionate, courteous, cordial, cooperative, and professional interaction with diverse groups of co-workers, external business partners, and the community.
  • Ability to operate a computer and use a variety of common software programs including Microsoft Office, spreadsheets, and customized databases.
  • Adheres to all NSC and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Attends all NSC in-services as required.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and effectively communicate with individuals and groups.
  • Knowledge of basic client management procedures for determining eligibility, assessing needs, identifying resources, making referrals, following up, and documenting client interactions and proactively supporting client’s pursuit of goals.
  • Ability to effectively interview and engage a client in appropriate programming.
  • Ability to effectively conduct one on one advocacy and/or educational presentations.
  • Ability to work in a team structure – demonstrating ability to collaborate and contribute to the team’s work.

 

Experience, Education, and Licensure

 

Minimum Experience: Experience working in the anti-hunger sector, or willingness to learn.

Minimum Education: High school diploma or equivalent required, some college preferred.

Licensure: n/a

  1. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
  2. Although work is primarily indoors, you may be required to travel outside to client and community locations.
  3. Possibility of travel in and around NSC’s service delivery area to support delivery of resettlement services to clients.
  4. Certain visits or work related appointments might be scheduled outside of traditional work hours as necessary.
