Development Assistant at the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine


The Cathedral of St. John the Divine is looking for a full-time Development Assistant to join its team and provide support in managing a robust portfolio of current and potential donors. The Development Assistant at the Cathedral- is immersed in all aspects of nonprofit development including individual fundraising, grant management, donor events and more. The Development team is responsible for fundraising for a wide range of programs including capital projects, a soup kitchen, an after-school program, summer camp, educational programs for children and adults, concert series, and art exhibitions. The Assistant works closely with the Program Manager, Operations Director and Director of Development as they work to meet fundraising goals for the world’s largest Gothic cathedral, located on an 11-acre campus of gardens and grounds in Upper Manhattan.


A typical day might include:


  • Drafting and mailing acknowledgement letters to donors
  • Selecting a menu and ordering catering for an event
  • Updating the Raiser’s Edge database of donors
  • Responding to donor inquiries by phone
  • Working with the finance department to ensure accurate record keeping
  • Gathering materials for a grant proposal to raise money for renovation of the Soup Kitchen
  • Brainstorming with the Development team about donor programming
  • Researching donors who might be interested in providing money to restore stained-glass windows
  • Working with team members to develop a yearly calendar of events, direct mailings, board meetings and other significant dates
  • Attending an all-staff meeting to discuss logistics for the procession of exotic animals that takes place on St. Francis Day every year
  • Joining the team in a spirited discussion about what color the tablecloths should be for the annual gala

  • Have worked in an office and can get along with anyone
  • Enjoy working both independently and in a collaborative setting
  • Have database experience, Raiser’s Edge strongly preferred
  • Have strong proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite
  • Are a nerd for research
  • Able to work with sensitive donor information with discretion
  • Have a great sense of humor
  • Like peacocks (we have three on the grounds) and dogs (we’re a pet friendly office)
