The Mission

KIPP LA Public Schools is a non-profit organization that operates free, open-enrollment, college-preparatory public charter schools serving students in South, Southeast, and East Los Angeles. KIPP LA’s mission is to teach the academic skills, foster the intellectual habits, and cultivate the character traits needed for our students to thrive in school, college, and life. Through the success of our students, KIPP LA's team and family will serve as a model of excellence and collaborate with others to raise the quality of education in Los Angeles.

KIPP LA currently operates 17 schools and serves approximately 7,200 students. Our team is expanding rapidly; over the next five years, we will more than double the number of students we serve.

The Opportunity

  • Research and recommend cost-effective benefit programs (wellness, childcare support, gym, etc.).
  • ​Develop and manage system for tracking employee time-off and leave policies
  • Manage employee compensation updates via HRIS system in conjunction with KIPP LA Finance team
  • Review benefits billing process monthly to ensure fiscal accuracy
  • Coordinate quarterly benefits education seminars with benefits broker and vendors at all KIPP LA locations
  • Review semi-monthly payroll to ensure compensation and deduction accuracy
  • Manage special situations including garnishments (e.g. child support, tax levies) and state agency requests (e.g. unemployment, disability, payroll taxes)
  • Internally, this role will be called Human Capital Manager

Management & Communication

  • Establish weekly work plan to effectively meet all goals.
  • Research learning and training opportunities for HR Team.
  • Participate in developing team goals and priorities.
  • Ensure that the KIPP LA team & family is well informed about policies, and benefits, by leveraging a variety of tools including the KIPP LA Self Service Portal, handbooks, and webinars.
  • Provide support and become a resource for all employees. Build and maintain healthy relationships with all employees.
  • Draft HR-related organization wide communications for Human Capital Director.
  • Collaborate with Talent Acquisition and Technology Teams during the hiring process including making salary recommendations and equipment needs
  • Prepare a comprehensive, annual culturally-rich new hire orientation for new hires; in tandem with Human Capital Director.

Policy, Procedure, Data Analysis & Compliance

  • Develop monthly communication/reporting for Human Capital Director, Director of Talent Acquisition, school and regional leaders.
  • Review and analyze data to provide strategic thinking and regional recommendations.
  • Create and revise personnel policies, including handbooks, job descriptions and position descriptions to protect the organization and uphold KIPP LA’s culture and values.
  • Maintain all HR documentation to ensure compliance with all Federal, State and City requirements.
  • Conduct quarterly audits of all personnel records ensuring compliance with new hire requirements including background checks, employment eligibility verifications, etc.
  • Monitor HR inquiries via email and HR ZenDesk system.
  • Facilitate new hire orientations and conduct and analyze exit interview data.
  • Coordinate with our Data Team to meet all organizational, city, state, etc. reporting requirements.
  • Review and analyze data to provide strategic thinking and regional recommendations.

The Qualifications

  • Bachelor degree with at least 5+ years of human resources experience
  • ​2 to 3 years of Benefits Administration experience preferred
  • Working knowledge of all employment laws (Federal, State and Local)
  • Senior or Professional in Human Resources (PHR/SPHR) preferred
  • Experience managing teams to results (leadership skill set)
  • Entrepreneurial mindset, with the creativity and versatility to work productively in a fast-paced environment
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint and HRIS HRB/Portal Administration (a must)
