The James Beard Foundation (JBF) is a vital cultural institution with deep roots honoring and advancing the culinary arts and industry for over 30 years. JBF’s mission is to celebrate, support, and elevate the people behind America’s food culture and champion a standard of good food anchored in talent, equity, and sustainability.

The Foundation is seeking a Vice President of Marketing to lead the organization’s marketing team to new levels of success at a pivotal time in JBF’s history. Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the VP of Marketing will be instrumental in supporting strategic initiatives, marketing & business planning, and operations across the organization.

The Vice President of Marketing serves as a key senior leadership team member and an active participant in making strategic decisions affecting the James Beard Foundation. This position is responsible for developing and executing a marketing strategy that supports the Foundation’s objectives. The ideal candidate is an empathetic leader, strategic problem solver, goal-oriented marketer, and effective brand steward. This role is based in New York City.

Key Responsibilities

  • Drive growth and brand affinity by building best in class marketing strategy underpinned by:
  • Audience segmentation and prioritization
  • Proactive brand building and thought leadership
  • Marketing of key initiatives, programs, and events to drive participation
  • Strategic partnerships
  • Manage and develop the Marketing and Communications team (x positions)
  • Act as a key partner to JBF leaders in support of their respective departmental objectives - Managing programs across multi-functional teams and with multiple agency partners
  • Manage the external PR agency and lead other marketing partnerships
  • Work closely with the Sponsorship team and strategic brand partners to ideate and deliver creative brand solutions
  • Establish departmental KPIs and oversee performance reporting for all key marketing initiatives and deliver Board reports
  • Manage the Board Marketing Committee and partner with Trustees to guide and maximize each leader’s success as fundraisers and ambassadors for JBF
  • Ensure internal and external brand alignment
  • Oversee the functions of lifecycle marketing (includes email), performance marketing, experiential marketing, owned social media marketing, and site experience
  • Create integrated campaigns and programs for our target segments
  • Identify and optimize paid and organic channels to drive full-funnel growth
  • Analyze and improve the marketing and content strategies by translating data into actionable insights and actions
  • Serve as a key frontline representative and leader for JBF and serve as an external ‘face’ of the organization, effectively representing JBF to a variety of existing and potential stakeholder
  • Uphold the Foundation’s core mission and values.


Qualifications

Desired experience of a successful candidate may include the following, but candidates will not be screened exclusively based on meeting these qualifications:

  • 10+ years of strategic marketing experience
  • 7+ years of direct management experience with demonstrated success leading and motivating teams as well as managing cross-functional teams
  • Proven strength in strategic and creative thinking who can think big picture / creative, innovative, and entrepreneurial
  • Proven history of driving successful and quantifiable promotional and brand building campaigns and programs
  • A confident leader who can prioritize well and communicate, both verbal and written, across all levels of the organization
  • Experience in collaboration with strategic brand partners to devise marketing strategies that satisfy both parties’ objectives
  • Experience in analyzing and assessing performance data, to optimize the marketing efforts across audiences and channels
  • Takes action with strengths in problem-solving, issue-resolution, and can make effective trade-off decisions based on ROI
  • Experience of Development / Fundraising communications strategy a ‘nice to have but not essential
  • Ability to work in a deadline-driven work environment, with attention to detail
  • Strong public speaking, and communication, skills with the ability to represent the Foundation at the highest level
  • Ability to develop and sustain meaningful and collaborative relationships with a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders
  • Competent networker with a diplomatic and persuasive personality and ability to convey the organizational mission and inspire and motivate action
  • Flexible and adaptable style; a leader who can positively impact both strategic and tactical initiatives, and is willing to take on tasks necessary to achieve desired results
  • Passion for the James Beard Foundation’s mission and a demonstrated commitment to advancing impact through racial equity, gender equity, sustainability, and leadership development are essential.

The salary band for this position begins at $130,000
