Position Summary: Working under the CEO and COO/Managing Director, the Development & Communications Director will be a key player in developing and executing a $4M annual fundraising plan. The Development & Communications Director will oversee the organization’s efforts in all aspects of foundation and government relations, corporate and individual giving, events, and communication strategy. The Director of Development will develop and implement strategies that promote long-term sustainable growth and deepen the organization’s relationships with existing and new donors. Position will supervise development staff including a Marketing & Retail Coordinator, Development Associate and Operations Coordinator & Database Specialist.

ShareWell has two main program initiatives: The Zimmer Children’s Museum for 0-8 year olds and youTHink, a creative youth development program for middle and high school students. We teach community values and social responsibility to children and youth through fun, interactive exhibits, classes and events. We use art and creativity to help young minds explore new ideas and develop their own. We help young people find their voice, cultivate a social conscience and make a positive impact on their communities.

Areas of Responsibility:

Institutional Giving

  1. Identify funding opportunities
  2. Facilitate the formulation of individual, foundation and corporate funding requests with the CEO and COO/Managing Director
  3. Oversee and/or prepare (as appropriate) foundation and corporate funding requests and reports
  4. Develop and maintain relationships with funders
  5. Work with program staff to develop requests that best serve museum constituents
  6. Ensure compliance with funders' requirements

Individual Giving

  1. Oversee content and production of newsletters, annual reports, direct mail appeals and development materials including brochures, one-sheets, membership program levels, decks and videos 
  2. Develop membership program and other campaigns to grow lower level contributor base
  3. Complete a yearly evaluation of membership program
  4. Oversee vision and execution of social media outreach, including participation in determining content of monthly e-blasts, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter updates

Special Events

  1. Work closely with CEO on all event fundraising efforts including sponsorship, logistics, tribute book, ticket, auction and gift bag solicitation for all major events (and online auction platforms)
  2. Develop and implement strategies for event attendee follow-up and engagement for all major events

Administrative Responsibilities

  1. Supervision of development staff
  2. Work with COO/Managing Director and Accounting & HR Manager Director to reconcile individual, foundation, government and corporate gifts and pledges monthly
  3. Maintain a sustainability plan and case statement for the organization
  4. With CEO, COO/Managing Director and Accounting & HR Manager, develop revenue goals for upcoming budget cycles
  5. Create and send a monthly update email to the Board of Directors
  6. Develop and disseminate a quarterly press release
  7. Attend meetings and events as appropriate


  • Bachelor's degree required, advanced degree or ongoing professional development preferred
  • 3+ years of progressively responsible fundraising experience and a proven record of successful cultivation and solicitation of gifts
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of all areas of fundraising, including grants, major gift acquisition, events and corporate giving
  • Proven track record in planning and achieving short and long-term goals
  • Exceptional interpersonal and influencing skills, tact and diplomacy with the ability to develop and maintain cooperative and successful working relationships with volunteers, staff and all donors; ability to serve as a team player and leader
  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically and creatively about engaging donors, and to develop plans of action and follow through
  • Ability to inspire and motivate volunteers and staff
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Political, analytical and negotiation skills. Sound judgment and superior problem-solving ability
  • Integrity and fiscal accountability
  • Experience working with boards, committees, volunteers
  • Must be willing and available to work evenings and weekends according to event-related scheduling
  • Experience working with donor management and data management systems preferred
