ROLE: Environmental Scientist, Environmental Engineer, or Geoscientist

FOCUS: Environmental and Public Health Dimensions of Upstream Oil and Gas Development

ORGANIZATION

PSE Healthy Energy is a non-profit energy science and policy research institute dedicated to supplying evidence-based scientific information and resources on the environmental, public health, social equity, and climate dimensions of energy production and use. Our work focuses on oil and gas, power plants, renewable energy, energy storage, and energy transitions. Much of our positive, dedicated, and high-functioning team is based out of our headquarters in Oakland, CA with staff also located across the United States.

PSE’s mission is to bring scientific transparency and clarity to energy policy discussions, helping to level the playing field between communities, the media, policymakers, and the private sector by generating, translating, and disseminating scientific information. No other interdisciplinary collaboration of physicians, scientists, and engineers exists to focus specifically on issues of health and sustainability at the intersection of energy science and policy.

POSITION

PSE Healthy Energy is looking for an environmental scientist, engineer, or geologist with a strong background in hydrogeology, geochemistry or surface water hydrology. The candidate would assist in the evaluation of impacts to natural resources (e.g., groundwater, surface water) and assessment of risk to public health, with an emphasis on water pathways associated with oil and gas development. The candidate would have the capability to provide written critiques of state and federal regulations and rapidly access information from state and federal databases relevant to oil and gas production. The candidate would have the capability to synthesize and interpret primary (collected by PSE members) or secondary (extracted from databases or other sources) data to evaluate impact to groundwater or surface water resources. Evaluations could entail hydrogeologic and/or geochemical modeling of gases (especially methane), major ions, metals, organic compounds, and radionuclides (e.g., radium, uranium). Work on radionuclides could include technologically enhanced naturally occurring radioactive materials (TENORM). At times, the candidate will be required to work in the field to collect primary data (e.g., gas, air or water sampling). While the emphasis of this position would be on studies involving impact to groundwater and surface water (including sediment) from oil and gas development, the ideal candidate would also have the capability to evaluate emissions from above ground sources of methane and other air pollutants related to oil and natural gas development. Hence, the ideal candidate would bring a diverse skill set to this position and have the ability to work on a variety of regulatory and technical issues.

ROLES and RESPONSIBILITIES

·     Research: utilize strong investigatory, analytical and writing skills to conduct data analysis, synthesize and aggregate relevant papers or research, edit documents and reports, visualize data, and both support and lead specific PSE research initiatives. Geohydrological systems modeling, statistical analysis, and other associated technical skills are strongly desired.

·     Education and outreach: write clear scientific explanations through media and blog posts; communicate scientific concepts directly to citizens, decisionmakers, NGOs and the media; and produce summaries of findings and rapid response analyses for the public and decisionmakers.

REQUIRED SKILLS

In addition to an ability to meet the above responsibilities, the position will require the applicant to possess most of the following, with some capabilities in the rest and an enthusiasm for learning:

·     A PhD or master’s degree with work experience in environmental science, engineering, geology, geochemistry, or related field

·     Experience working with, cleaning, managing, analyzing, interpreting and visualizing large datasets. Candidates should also have a working knowledge of best practices in data management in collaborative environments (e.g., clearly documented data sources, including descriptive metadata).

·     Willingness to travel to the field to conduct environmental sampling

·     Strong writing skills including the demonstrated ability to publish research in peer-reviewed journals

·     A proven record of being able to work both collaboratively and independently

·     Scientific and moral integrity

·     A sense of humor

DESIRED SKILLS

·     Ability to work at the science-policy interface

·     Familiarity with hydrogeological and geochemical software packages (e.g., PHREEQ, Geochemist Workbench)

·     Familiarity with subsurface visualization programs (e.g., geologic cross-sections)
