    Description

    Position Summary: Wesley Theological Seminary is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Controller to oversee the institution's financial operations. The Controller will be responsible for managing the accounting department, ensuring the accuracy of financial statements, implementing and maintaining internal controls, and providing strategic financial insights to support the seminary’s mission and goals.

    About the Role:

    1. Financial Reporting and Analysis:
      • Conduct and manage quarterly, and annual financial closing processes.
      • Generate financial reports and analysis to support decision-making by senior management and the Board of Trustees.
      • Assist in grant reporting and ensure compliance with grant requirements and restrictions.
    2. Budgeting and Forecasting:
      • Assist in the preparation and monitoring of budgets, forecasts, and financial plans.
      • Provide ongoing financial forecasting and variance analysis.
      • Assist in the preparation of long-term financial plans and projections.
    3. Internal Controls and Compliance:
      • Develop, implement, and maintain effective internal control policies and procedures.
      • Prepare and submit tax forms.
      • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulatory requirements.
      • Coordinate the annual external audit and manage relationships with auditors.
    4. Cash Management and Investment:
      • Oversee cash flow planning and ensure availability of funds as needed.
      • Assist with temp and restricted funds, including scholarships and specific ministry program funds.
      • Manage banking relationships and monitor and report on investment performance and endowment, work closely with investment advisors.
      • Optimize investment strategies in alignment with the seminary’s financial goals.
    5. Accounting Operations:
      • Supervise and mentor accounting staff, providing guidance and professional development opportunities.
      • Collaborate closely with the development and student services departments.
      • Oversee all accounting operations, including donor gift processing, investment activity, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and general ledger functions.
      • Ensure the accurate and timely processing of financial transactions.
    6. Strategic Financial Leadership:
      • Provide financial insights and recommendations to senior leadership.
      • Participate in strategic planning initiatives and contribute to institutional growth and sustainability.
      • Collaborate with other departments to support financial literacy and adherence to budgetary guidelines.

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA or MBA preferred.
    • Minimum of 7-10 years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 3 years in a supervisory role.
    • Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting.
    • Experience in higher education or the non-profit sector is preferred.
    • Proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Office Suite; experience with Paycom is a plus.
    • Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively across departments.
    • High level of integrity and commitment to ethical financial practices.
