Appellate Advocates is a nonprofit public defender organization, based in New York City, which for over 25 years has been providing superior representation of individuals convicted of criminal offenses in Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island who cannot afford private counsel. Our attorneys, from a variety of diverse backgrounds, are experienced in criminal law and believe in a holistic, client-centered approach to vindicating every client's constitutional rights and working to overturn unjust convictions and sentences and assist with their reentry to the community upon release. While our main work is appeals, we also represent clients in Sex Offender Registration Act hearings, reinvestigate cases and file motions for post-conviction relief with a focus on ameliorating immigration consequences, and seek to vacate convictions for victims of sex trafficking and to reduce sentences of domestic violence survivors.

Position Description: The Managing Attorney is responsible for the administrative management of the office including case intake, case assignments to attorneys, coordination of CLE programs, management oversight of paralegals, and City and State invoicing and reporting. The Managing Attorney will work closely with the Diversity Officer to ensure that Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging are prioritized in all hiring and retention efforts and in the day-to-day operation of the Office. The Managing Attorney also serves as liaison to the courts, including the coordination and reporting of case filing commitments, and will carry a modest caseload of direct appeal or post- conviction cases. The Managing Attorney would join the management team that sets policy and controls the operation of Appellate Advocates.

General Responsibilities:

  • Manage intake of cases from the courts, oversee assembly of the record on appeal and the screening of cases, and assign cases to individual attorneys.
  • Supervise certain non-attorney support staff.
  • Communicate with attorneys to establish commitment dates for the filing of appeals and respond to court inquiries concerning those case filing commitments.
  • Manage financial invoicing for funding by New York City and New York State according to systems established under Appellate Advocates’s contract with New York City.
  • Oversee compliance with all New York City and New York State quarterly and annual reporting requirements.
  • Work in concert with the Diversity Officer to oversee efforts by the Appellate Advocates hiring team, the Diversity Committee, and the Racial Justice Committee, to follow best practices in promoting Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging in hiring materials and practice, retention efforts, educational programs, and overall Office environment.
  • Coordinate and manage all Continuing Legal Education programs presented by Appellate Advocates, which is a certified CLE provider.
  • Coordinate Information Technology services provided by contractors and consultants and resolve routine I.T. issues when possible.
  • In conjunction with the Operations Manager, coordinate Social Media outreach.
  • The possibility of representing clients directly on appeal and in post-conviction proceedings and/or supervising the work of Staff Attorneys is dependent upon experience in those areas.


  • Significant not-for-profit management experience required; five years preferred.
  • Admission to the New York State Bar or imminent plans for admission by applicant from another jurisdiction.
  • Significant criminal defense experience required; in New York preferred.
  • Significant experience with Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging initiatives preferred.
  • Significant experience demonstrating a commitment to public defense, social justice, and/or equity preferred.
  • Excellent administrative, organizational, strategic planning, writing, and case management skills required.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with court personnel and legal practitioners required.

Salary and Benefits:
