The Green Energy Consumers Alliance is a nonprofit organization with a mission to harness the power of consumers to speed the transition to clean energy. We fulfill our mission by combining consumer-facing program with public policy advocacy at the state and local levels in Massachusetts and Rhode Island. We have seventeen employees in Boston and Providence. The programs we have for consumers include green electricity, heating, rooftop solar, Shave the Peak, energy efficiency, and an EV buyers group program called Drive Green. We have a variety of funding sources -- grants, commissions, contracts, donations, but our dominant source of revenue is earned income through green electricity.


Green Energy Consumers' Staff Accountant can work a hybrid schedule of remote and in-person out of our Boston or Providence offices. They would report to the Finance Director and oversee work done by the Accounts Payable Clerk and Office Manager/bookkeeper. Our new Staff Accountant would be part of an intellectually stimulating environment while helping the organization fulfill its mission. This is the ideal opportunity for an individual looking to gain experience on a wide range of accounting tasks and financial reporting, all while getting a big picture view of the finances of a mid-sized organization with a ~$7 million budget. Our new Staff Accountant will play a key role in the finance team. Responsibilities for the position include:

  • Manage general ledger and supporting schedules for monthly close including fixed assets, prepaid and accrued expenses, deferred revenue and restricted income
  • Monitor accounts payable and accounts receivable aging on a monthly basis
  • Reconcile cash accounts on a monthly basis
  • Download and track individual donations on a monthly basis
  • Reconcile all balance sheet accounts on a monthly basis
  • Ener invoices for Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) and other contracts as needed
  • Assist in financial reporting process for Finance Committee on the Board of Directors
  • Assist in annual budgeting process and annual audit
  • Record all (roughly ten) transactions for subsidiary, Amory Street Energy Ventures on a quarterly basis and deposit checks.
  • Ad-hoc reporting/analysis


Required qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Accounting/Finance or 4-8 years appropriate relevant experience.

  • Experience using business software, such as QuickBooks, Excel, Word, and Outlook
  • Knowledge of accounting principles and standards, (non-profit accounting knowledge is not required, but willingness to learn is)
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills
  • Attention to detail and the ability and flexibility to manage multiple projects in a small organizational environment while retaining a sense of humor and mission.

The following would be a plus:

  • Excellent Excel skills
  • Familiarity with QuickBooks
  • Self-learner who demonstrates initiative
  • Inclusive and accepting person who embraces teamwork
  • Experience managing people or projects

Hours and Compensation

This is a full-time position, 37.5 hours per week between 9 am to 5 pm, Monday to Friday, but hours can be flexible. Our offices are in Boston and Providence, but at least some work can be performed from your home. We offer an excellent work environment with competitive wages and a strong benefits package. The pay range for this position is $42,000 to $52,000 as well as a possible signing bonus, commensurate with qualifications and experience.
