PDX Jazz Seeks Dynamic Executive Director

PDX Jazz, a 501(c)(3) non-profit and the premiere jazz presenting organization of Portland, Oregon, is seeking an extraordinary leader to take the helm of our successful organization at an exciting stage of our development. The Executive Director, a new position funded in part by a three-year capacity building grant from the M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust, will lead us in the next level of growth and impact.

The ideal candidate will be a dynamic and engaging leader and spokesperson for the organization who, along with the Board and Artistic Director, will set the vision and overall strategy for the organization. The Executive Director (ED) will excel at sustaining meaningful relationships with corporate and community leaders, motivating staff, and communicating the importance of our mission and the success of our outcomes.

With a focus on fundraising, the ED will also have a smart head for business, a passion for music and a commitment to equity. The ED will be equally skilled at cultivating financial support, leading and implementing strategic plans, partnering effectively with the board, donors, staff, and community partners, reviewing financial statements, and overseeing program delivery and ongoing evaluation.

PDX Jazz, at the center of Portland’s jazz cultural landscape for 16 years, is a vibrant and thriving non-profit cultural arts organization whose mission is dedicated to curating jazz in Portland, Oregon and fostering the growth of musical offerings in the Pacific Northwest. PDX Jazz is recognized nationally and internationally for its annual PDX Jazz Festival held in February, the caliber of its year-round presentations, and for its significant educational and community outreach activities. Primary Responsibilities

The Executive Director reports to the Board of Directors and is responsible for the overall management of the organization including but not limited to:

·        Forge an effective and positive working relationship with the members of the Board of Directors;

·        Create a harmonious, collaborative and positive working relationship with the Artistic Director to support programming developed by AD;

·        Build and motivate a highly functional professional administrative team; recruit, mentor, evaluate, train and inspire a group of arts professionals to help achieve the mission of the organization;

·        Implement and oversee effective administration of all PDX Jazz operations including Human Resources, Facilities, and Finance;

·        Design and control a sustainable financial model and improve the bottom line through fiscal oversight, careful expense control and increased income generation;

·        With the support of the Board, lead PDX Jazz fundraising activities by identifying, cultivating, and soliciting gifts from individuals, foundations, and corporations;

·        Develop and implement an organizational strategic plan;

·        Develop and oversee communication strategies for PDX Jazz and guide the marketing and external messaging;

·        Enthusiastically communicate the unique contributions made by PDX Jazz to the jazz world, the community, and to education and arts leaders in the Northwest and nationally;

·        Assure sufficient financial resources for success by inspiring and managing volunteers and staff, building community relations, and engaging member organizations;

·        Work in partnership with the Board, staff, and community members to execute the mission of PDX Jazz;

·        Directly supervise Artistic Director, Director of Finance and Operations, Director of Education, volunteers, interns;


Preferred Qualifications

The successful candidate will have:

·        A minimum of 3 - 5 years of experience in a producing/presenting organization with a proven ability to support the organizational vision and mission while balancing the financial and managerial forces inherent in every arts organization;

·        A belief in the mission of PDX Jazz and a recognition of its importance in the field of music and the contemporary artistic cultural landscape;

·        Leadership ability and behaviors demonstrated by a keen sense of self awareness, empathy, the ability to analyze complex management and political situations, and the ability to lead, influence, and reach consensus on a range of topics among multiple constituents;

·        An entrepreneurial approach and sense of urgency coupled with a calm demeanor;

·        Hands-on financial management skills, including budget preparation, analysis, decision-making and reporting;

·        Strong organizational abilities including strategic planning, delegating, program development and task facilitation;

·        A demonstrated record of fundraising and grant success with knowledge of fundraising strategies and donor relations unique to nonprofit sector;

·        A demonstrated sense of marketing, with an understanding of new media, electronic, and print branding, and the sensitivity to balance building a brand while maintaining artistic sensibility;

·        A person of unquestioned integrity who engenders trust and confidence;

Additional Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with the greater Portland area arts scene and culture;
  • Knowledge of the greater Portland area philanthropic and nonprofit arena;
  • Able to pass a criminal background check;

Compensation and Timing

The ED is a full-time salaried exempt employee expected to work evenings and weekends as needed outside of the routine workday. The ED will be located in the Portland Metro Area.
