Position Overview

The Illinois Executive Director leads America Needs You – Illinois and is responsible for its strategy, program performance, funding and success. The Executive Director establishes and maintains relationships with local stakeholders, cultivates funding sources and manages the program (100+ students annually), staff, board and volunteers. The Executive Director works with the national CEO, COO, CDO, and the local board to set local strategy and growth plans in accordance with the ANY Strategic Plan.


This position requires a commitment to our mission and work, a track-record of achieving excellence, proven success in management and fundraising and the ability to oversee the day-to-day operations of a growing organization. The role is based in Chicago, requires Saturday work (with subsequent flex days), and quarterly travel to New York. The Executive Director reports directly to the CEO of America Needs You. 



Strengthen and grow the program(s) and ensure that the site operates in accordance with the ANY standards, while taking into account local needs:

  • Execute 18 Saturday workshops, including managing all staff, students, volunteers, speakers, activities and events associated with the workshops
  • Oversee recruitment of 75-100 Fellows and 75-100 Mentor Coaches annually; enhance recruitment strategy and pipeline, and build and maintain university and nonprofit partnerships
  • Source internships from corporate partners and other sources
  • Achieve program outcomes (90% Fellow retention, 80% Fellow/MC attendance, 90% graduation, 90% internships, 95% community college transfer, 90% job/grad school placement)
  • Source new partner program (school-based) opportunities, with support of CEO and COO
  • Build a strong community for Fellows, Mentor Coaches, alumni and volunteers


Outreach and Development

Work with the CEO and CDO to design and implement an effective local fundraising strategy for the IL site:

  • Build a sustainable and diversified local funding base that includes individuals, corporations, foundations and public sources (raising $600K+ annually)
  • Serve as the external face of America Needs You - Illinois
  • Build and manage relationships with the philanthropic community, key organizations and the media
  • Plan special events
  • Submit grant proposals and reports; hold donor meetings and solicit gifts; secure in-kind support
  • Engage current board members and identify a diverse group of new board members, as needed
  • Manage board communications and facilitate quarterly meetings


Staff Management

Lead, inspire and energize the local team (Program Manager and two Program Coordinators):

  • Provide daily leadership presence and create and promote open communication and a professional, productive and positive work environment
  • Oversee training and management and ensure efficient office operations aligned with ANY’s office culture and policies and
  • Embody ANY’s culture statement and core values: Excellence, Community, Integrity, Curiosity, Accountability, Data & Results


Financial Management

Assist the Director of Finance in the budgeting process and in developing a multi-year operating budget and manage the site budget and the day-to-day operations.


Skills and Qualifications

  • Passion for ANY’s mission and commitment to ANY’s core values
  • Advanced degree preferred, Bachelor’s Degree required
  • Hands-on, can do attitude
  • Outstanding relationship management and communication/public speaking skills
  • Proven skills and experience in fundraising and moves management
  • Knowledge of Illinois’s educational, civic and philanthropic landscape
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders, including college students, volunteers, university partners, board members and donors
  • Ability to mobilize small and large groups to action
  • Commitment to outcomes driven performance
  • Proven track record of program development and implementation
  • Ability to lead a program within a larger national network
  • Detail-oriented and excellent writing and editing skills
  • Significant supervisory experience
  • Highly organized and strong understanding of technology and information systems pertinent to the role (Salesforce, Causeview, Haiku, Wizehive)
  • Saturday work required
