No Longer Empty is seeking an Executive Director to lead the organization into a new phase of development and growth. Building on the success of the organization’s 10 years of curating in an expanded field and developing innovative and highly impactful educational programming, the organization is now poised to capitalize on its successes through both re-visioning and expansion of the organization and its programmatic reach.
SUMMARY OF POSITION
Reporting to and working closely with the Board of Directors, the Executive Director is responsible for the overall success of the 501(C3) nonprofit organization. He/she is a strong and visionary leader with a proven track record in fundraising, arts programming, and organizational management.
The Executive Director will exercise initiative and independent judgment, is able to tackle complex programmatic challenges, and works effectively with a wide range of audiences, the Board, staff, contract personnel, and volunteers. The Executive Director leads NLE’s artistic and curatorial vision, and engagement with complex social issues that are central to contemporary cultural practice
and the communities and audiences NLE serves.
Building and maintaining lasting partnerships is critical to NLE’s success. The Executive Director is a natural leader and partner; growing current relationships and establishing new links with community stakeholders, foundations, government, artists, partner organizations, thought leaders, and others.
Working closely with the Board, staff, and stakeholders, the Executive Director will identify strengths, challenges, and new opportunities, then develop and execute the priority steps necessary for the attainment of short, medium, and long-term objectives.
§ Refine the artistic vision and mission of No Longer Empty to build on its 10-year history, amplify the impact of programs, and address urgent issues that impact the field, partners, audiences, and communities.
§ Oversee fundraising and development activities of the organization, including:
o Growing foundation and individual giving, government support, and corporate sponsorship;
o Planning and implementation of annual benefit and other special events;
o Ensuring compliance with grants and non-profit fundraising guidelines.
§ Oversee financial management to ensure stability of the organization, including but not limited to budgeting, cash
flow, and oversight of accounting functions;
§ Work with the Board of Directors to:
o Prepare annual and quarterly budgets to ensure the organization functions within its financial limitations;
o Provide effective and timely information to facilitate informed decisions, including but not limited to policy, fundraising and financial management;
o Support the growth, diversification and edification of the Board.
§ Collaborate with staff, guest curators, and educators to ensure effective development, management and implementation of existing and new programs, including:
o Site-specific exhibitions;
o Education programs, especially a range of multidisciplinary public programs, youth programs, and ongoing legacy programs;
o Creation and development of partnerships with complementary organizations.
§ Ensure consistent evaluation of impact, including collecting qualitative and quantitative information on participation,
and reporting on performance metrics;
§ Drive the objectives and direction of external and internal communications of NLE, including:
o Advocate on behalf of the arts and social practice, and ensuring strong relationships and information flow in the communities in which NLE works;
o Work collaboratively with staff responsible for internal and external communications;
o Identify new outreach opportunities, including press and social media;
§ Lead the strategic recruitment, development, and recognition of a small, hard-working staff. Maintain a positive and productive work environment that attracts, motivates, and retains a diverse group of top-quality employees, interns and volunteers. Perform annual reviews and assess current capacities and opportunities for growth within the team.
§ Demonstrated artistic and curatorial vision
§ Leadership, motivational and team building skills
§ Agility in navigating multiple fields including arts, social justice, education, urban planning, and community development
§ Proven record of growing a non-profit organization, including:
o Demonstrated success in fundraising, including foundation and individual giving, government support, corporate sponsorship, and special events
o Strong program development (experience with curators and educators a plus)
o Ability to navigate operational challenges
o Meaningful collaborations with community stakeholders and partner organizations
§ Strong interest in financial management, budgeting and planning
§ Excellent communication and relationship-building skills, including public speaking and engaging diverse
§ 5+ years relevant professional experience
§ Master’s degree or higher in relevant field, or equivalent experience

No Longer Empty curates site-responsive exhibitions, education and public programs in unconventional locations around New York City. We create artistic platforms for collaboration and dialogue around social, cultural and political issues. Our exhibitions and educational programs amplify existing community networks and cultural resources.
No Longer Empty’s exhibitions, education and public programs are free and accessible to everyone. At the heart of our model is community engagement. A synthesis of local interviews and historical research drives the curatorial process. In turn, emergent narratives and the architecture of the site provide artists with new opportunities to expand their practices through commissioned work.
