Habitat for Humanity Guatemala is a non-profit affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, an internationally renowned organization dedicated to improving the global housing crisis. Habitat Guatemala, founded in 1979, is the oldest and largest international affiliate. The organization helps to support low-income families to improve their living conditions by building new homes and offering housing improvements, such as smokeless stoves, latrines, or water filters. To date, Habitat Guatemala, with the support of a large volunteer base, has built more than 120,000 housing solutions and has raised the living standards of more than 720,000 Guatemalans.

Habitat for Humanity Guatemala is seeking a Grant Writer to join its International Resource Development team. The ideal candidate will work to identify international donor prospects, principally from foundations and corporate partners, write funding proposals in English and Spanish, and assist in the relationship management and project execution of existing international donors, including follow-up with local staff and writing project reports.

This position requires excellent persuasive writing skills in order to produce competitive proposal materials for various different types of funders, including foundations, corporations, churches, Rotary Clubs, and individuals, as well as highly proficient written and spoken Spanish to communicate effectively in our mostly Spanish-speaking office environment. The successful candidate also needs strong research skills in order to investigate new sources for fundraising opportunities.This is a full-time position based out of our National Office in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala (with the current COVID-19 pandemic context the position will be mainly remote, but the candidate must still be based in Quetzaltenango) with a 12-15 month minimum commitment.

Responsibilities:

  • Work directly with the Director of Resource Development to prospect, research, and submit grant applications to new and existing donors. Professional track-record with success for grant-writing is a high priority.
  • Coordinate with Habitat for Humanity International to track prospects and contacts and create prospecting profiles for international grant opportunities.
  • Collaborate closely with our in-country Operations Department in designing and writing project and program descriptions in a clear and professional manner (requires knowledge of goals/objectives/outcomes language in addition to drafting work-plans and budgets).
  • Research relevant topics to new initiatives within HFHG and housing in Guatemala and share this information internally.
  • Organize, complete, and submit all project reports in a timely manner to donors as required.
  • Create, update, and maintain major donor profiles.
  • Work closely with the Monitoring & Evaluations and Financial teams to see that proper reporting and data is collected and shared with our partners as necessary.
  • Assist in all other ways, as needed, to help the department and organization meet the goal of providing affordable housing solutions to Guatemalan families in need, as well as occasionally working in the field with volunteers.

Requirements

  • Advanced Spanish proficiency and English fluency. The ideal candidate will be able to easily understand and be understood via email, in person, and on the phone in both English and Spanish.
  • Excellent writing skills and attention to detail.
  • Willingness to travel within Guatemala using all forms of public transportation.
  • Self-motivation and ability to work independently, but also enjoy working with teammates.
  • Aptitude to work with donors of all sizes and backgrounds.
  • Strong ability to organize, prioritize, and coordinate tasks in a flexible manner, including meeting internal and external deadlines.
  • Willingness to live and work in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala.
  • Commitment of at least 12-15 months.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience living in developing countries, preferably Latin America.
  • Familiarity with program development language, financial basics, and international development topics, including Behavior Change, Communication and Theory of Change.
  • Prior experience working or volunteering with NGOs.

Salary

Q4,700 per month - a competitive local, Guatemalan salary
